Recap / The Interns S 6 E 20

Go To

Today is Kisegach's last day as the Chief Doctor of this hospital, and her replacement already tastes her victory. But war is not over yet! While Kisegach already gave up, Bykov did not. He sends his interns to collect signatures of the other workers; if they just suddenly quits, all at once, it surely would attract ministry's attention. Unfortunately, he fails to convince anyone... so he just fakes the signatures; cheating or not, it still works and ministry withdraws their candidate.

Phil's patient is Sergei Zhukov, a musician from well-known Russian band. And Varya and Lyuba are his fans. When they asks to "give" the patient to them, he suspects nothing... and they quickly annoys the poor guy to the point he demands Phil back. But Phil becomes interested why everyone likes Zhukov's music so much, and, after hearing it, quickly becomes the fan himself; in fact, he's even worse, since Varya at least doesn't try to sing. Meanwhile, Lobanov plans to invite Olga into cinema: today is the sixth anniversary of their first meeting, and watching movies together on that date is their tradition — and now, his last chance to win Olga back; unfortunately, turns out that she just forgot about this special day, and all his attempts to remind her ends in failure. But then he receives another opportunity: he replaces Phil as Zhukov's doctor, and asks him for favour: Semyon originally met Olga on Zhukov's concert, and if Zhukov plays for them right here, in the ward, it may remind Olga about their past. The plan works, and Olga seemingly falls in love with Semyon again... to Phil's jealousy.

This episode provides examples of:

  • As Himself: Phil's patient is Sergei Zhukov, musician from well known Russian band "Hands Up". This means nothing to Phil, a foreigner, but Lyuba and Varya are, actually, his fans. This leads to... problems later on.
  • Defiant to the End: Non-fatal variant. Knowing that she would be reassigned anyway, Kisegach trashes her office just to spite her replacement. Which, of course, bites her in the ass when it turns out that she wouldn't be reassigned after all. Bykov doesn't miss the chance to make the fun of situation.
  • Forgotten Anniversary: Today is the sixth anniversary of the day when Semyon had met Olga; they used to celebrate it every year with a romantic date in the cinema. Semyon thinks that this is his last chance to win Olga back... but she forgot about it, and even Semyon's signs (gifting her flowers, or bringing her tickets on romantic movie) fails to remind her, forcing him to try the last thing — reconstructing the circumstances of their original meeting in hope that Olga remembers; she does.
  • Hollywood Tone-Deaf: When Phil tries to show Zhukov his "love song" (he was a part of a music band himself back at the college), he sounds like some (average at best) punk-rock singer. Zhukov almost immediately asks him to stop.
  • Jerkass: Kisegach' replacement doesn't even bother to wait until Kisegach actually leaves to start acting like this place now belongs to her. She already searches for a new secretary, because "using someone else's ones is like wearing their old clothes", and dismissively discusses Kisegach just as "former" on a phone right in Anastasia's presence; all of this while lying on sofa in Kisegach's office. When Kisegach angrily tells her to leave, she openly mocks her and tells her that "you're supposed to go out with dignity". Later, she thinks aloud how she would redecorate Kisegach's office, again in Anastasia's presence. When Kisegach asks her directly wether she does this on purpose, she says "yes".
  • Loony Fan:
    • Varya and Lyuba learns that their favourite musician, Sergei Zhukov from "Hands Up" band, is now Phil's patient. So, they asks him to "give" the guy to them, which he does, not realising how it would end. Zhukov gets tired of them very quickly, and asks to return Phil.
    • Phil becomes interested just why everyone likes Zhukov's music so much, and quickly becomes a fan himself after listening to his songs, to Zhukov's irritation (Sergei previously liked being treated by him specifically because Phil is unaware about him). Fortunately, Phil gets replaced by Lobanov, who knows Zhukov's band, but actually dislikes their music, and agrees to protect him from fans if he makes him a favour.
  • Love Triangle: It seems that Olga fell in love with Semyon again, which means, there's now a triangle between her, Semyon and Phil.
  • Old Flame: Lobanov's plan actually works, since his surprise manages to resurrect Olga's love to him.
  • Silly Love Songs: Semyon had met Olga six years ago on a concert of "Hands Up" band; now, the leader of this band, Sergei Zhukov, as a favour to Semyon for making sure that no one would disturb him again, agrees to sing a love song for Semyon and Olga to imitate that day. This actually works, since Olga falls in love with Lobanov again.
  • Sleeping Their Way to the Top: This is implied to be the way how Kisegach's replacement had obtained this position in the first place — by being the lover of some high-ranking official in the ministry, who now tries to push her on an "easy" position with good salary.
  • Sore Loser: When Kisegach repeats to her "replacement" her own words that "you're supposed to go out with dignity", she pours her coffee on the table, and insults her before leaving.
  • 0% Approval Rating: Invoked. Bykov cooperates with his interns to force their new boss out, and get Kisegach back. How? He orders them to ask everyone in the hospital to resign in protest to provoke ministry into action. Except... they manages to convince literally no one (even amongst interns, the only one to sign is Gleb, who doesn't count, as he knows that he would be fired by the new management). Bykov still finds a way to deal with the situation, and Kisegach is delighted with their support... right until she learns that Bykov just faked the signatures. Fortunately, the plan still works, and scares ministry into withdrawing their candidate.
