Recap / The Interns S 14 E 1

Go To

The day has come. Only few hours left until the wedding, and everyone's making the final preparations. Everyone's nervous. Especially Kisegach, since the time is short, but Bykov isn't here yet, and ignores her calls. Eventually, Bykov calls her himself, and reveals that he was arrested. Since he can't attend the wedding, Kisegach should create some creative and believable explanation for his absence which wouldn't involve police. After failing to receive any answer from a cop (who started acting rude and hostile, giving answers like "he is here for breaking rules"), Kisegach asks Bykov himself — and he reminds that Kisegach herself had asked to avoid causing troubles on the wedding by rude behaviour, drunk antics, anti-semitic comments (half of their guests and bride are Jews!), blatant attempts to usurp toastmaster role, mock guests with fake "diagnoses" and, most important, mock Gleb and Sophia. He did it the best way he can think of: now, he certainly wouldn't be around to spoil everything! When she gets angry, he reveals that real reason was conflict with police colonel, drunk like a pig and demanding VIP conditions, in very rude manner. Bykov called him "biomass", and is now arrested for insulting "officer on duty". Kisegach fails to convince the cop to release Bykov, and tries to bribe him, which gets her arrested and put in the same cell. Fortunately it's when the (now-sober) colonel shows up, apologises for prior behaviour, frees them and offers to transport them to registration office: they still have time.

Sophia still remembers that she had said yesterday, and doubts whether she should marry Gleb at all. Her friends tries to calm her down, thinking that she must be just nervous like everyone else... only for her to run away the instant they stops looking. Or did she? Turns out that she only leaved the apartment, standing on the ledge and talking via phone with someone. Polina, just in case, suggests Sophia to take a sedative pill. But Sophia still can't stop thinking whether she needs that marriage or not, and asks Polina to lie to Gleb that she cheated on him with a male stripper. Or that she's infertile. Polina, not having other options, tries to give her another sedative pill. It doesn't stop Sophia from trying the other variant: that she became lesbian, just yesterday, and is no longer interested in men. Sophia "just in case" gives her another pill. Lyuba manages to somehow awake Sophia (who fell asleep due to all those pills), and they are en-route to registration office.

Gleb starts feeling a weird itching throughout his whole body. Most obvious explanation wouldn't work because he had no sexual contacts yesterday, not even with Sophia. Asking Kupitman — Sophia's uncle — may and would cause unwanted conclusions, but what other option he has? Hope that no one would notice him itching? Unfortunately, Kupitman reacts just like Gleb expected, and angrily tells him to go to his office, refusing to consult over phone and hope that nothing bad would happen. To Yakov, he lies that he goes to bring his... ehm, cognac he was gifted by his patients. Kupitman would, as exception, take Gleb's tests as a top priority, but even then it would take at least an hour, so Gleb calls Timur to start "buying bride" without him, and stall for time for as long as possible. But when Kupitman is about to finish testing Gleb, Yakov suddenly comes in. Yakov was here to make sure that his cousin wouldn't get wasted and ruin everything, but now he has more important problem to worry about — and Gleb wouldn't go anywhere until they would receive the confirmation that he is innocent and clean; which would take awhile: here's a full hour until the test results would arrive. Without Gleb, the "bride buying" ritual goes very awkward, but since Gleb needs more time, Timur and others needs to think how they may stale until he arrives. While in some aspects Timur replaces him, others obviously wouldn't work without the groom. Kupitman, meanwhile, learns that the lab gear had broke, meaning that they wouldn't learn more until tomorrow. Yakov suggests to try the other hospitals, but, after dealing with Gleb's problem, they three gets stuck in a traffic jam. Gleb loses patience with a taxi, and just hires one biker to ride to the registration office.

Since Gleb is too late, wedding has to be postponed (with other couple going first), so Gleb receives slightly more time. But Sophia now thinks that Gleb thinks similarly to her, and just decides to ignore the wedding altogether — and she's perfectly happy with that, since she still thinks that marriage isn't required. Bykov and Kisegach arrives at literally the last moment, shortly being followed by Gleb. But now... Sophia run away for real. She calls Polina to say the last goodbye: she isn't ready for the wedded life, and would rather live for herself; she's sorry, but it's the only way.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Bullying a Dragon: As cool as Bykov is, going into open conflict with that drunk police colonel (whom he calls "biomass") was not the smartest decision, and results in him getting fifteen days of arrest, for disrespecting "officer on duty". He's lucky that the cop forgives him when sobers up.
  • Disaster Dominoes: Gleb's plot is the one long streak of disasters. Firstly, he starts suffering from a weird itch which can't be explained (not only he never cheated on Sophia — he had no sex yesterday at all); as he wouldn't be able to hide it forever, he has to call Kupitman, who forces him to undergo "express-test" (rather painful, possibly intentionally), which would take at least an hour till results arrives. Unfortunately, Yakov arrives and sees them — and at that exact moment they learns that the lab equipment is broken, and repair would take until tomorrow. They go to find another clinic, which confirms Gleb's innocence, but on the way back gets stuck in a traffic jam. Gleb still manages to arrive, but by that point, Sophia already decided to run away.
  • Downer Ending: Just when Gleb, Bykov and Kisegach finally makes it to the wedding, Sophia decides that screw the wedding, and runs away.
  • Entitled Bastard: Drunk police colonel acts like utter asshole to everyone around him, yet still expects that everyone would immediately comply with his orders (like giving him VIP conditions and prettiest nurses over there, for unclear, likely dirty reasons). When his status fails to impress Bykov, he tries to press him into compliance and "apologising". Bykov still doesn't, and gets arrested under the first excuse the drunk cop can find. However, later it turns out that he's more adequate when sober; he apologises, releases Bykov (and even Kisegach, who was arrested for bribing another cop in attempt to free Bykov) and even offers his help with making it to the wedding in time.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Now-sober colonel feels disgusted by his subordinate arresting Kisegach and putting her in the cell. He refuses to hear any of his excuses (even though the subordinate was technically right, as Kisegach tried to bribe him).
  • Gone Horribly Wrong: Everything goes wrong right from the start, for everyone involved in this wedding:
    • Sophia thinks that she no longer wants marriage. Polina, in attempt to calm her down, gives her multiple sedative pills... resulting in her falling asleep. Lyuba manages to awake her later, though.
    • Gleb starts feeling weird itching. Kupitman agrees to examine him to check whether it's venereology-related, but the lab gear breaks on them, and wouldn't be fixed until tomorrow. It only would go worse from here.
    • Bykov gets arrested by police over conflict with a drunk police colonel. Kisegach tries to bribe a cop to get him freed, which results in Anastasia herself being arrested.
    • In the very end, after they somehow resolved all the other problems, Sophia just runs away at the last moment, taking Gleb being late as the "proof" that she should cancel the wedding.
  • Last-Second Word Swap: When explaining why he leaves, Kupitman almost reveals that he lied about being straight-edge by saying that he goes for his cognac, only to correct himself at last moment into saying that cognac was gifted by his patients (still true, but wouldn't incriminate him as alcoholic).
  • Police Are Useless: When Bykov goes into conflict with the obviously pig-drunk police colonel over him acting rude, aggressively and entitled, other two cops sides with the drunkard instead of Bykov, and actually arrests Bykov for "insulting the representative of authority on duty". Yes, he was on duty during that scene. After sobering up, he becomes more adequate and offers his help, but that scene only shows how little responsibility for his actions he really has; him disregarding his subordinate pointing that Kisegach was arrested for bribery attempt also doesn't show him in good light.
  • Put on a Bus: Sophia runs away right from her wedding, thinking that she would rather live for herself.
  • Runaway Bride: Throughout the whole episode, Polina tries to prevent Sophia from running away from her wedding (by giving her sedative pills, thinking that those are just panic attacks). But despite all her attempts, at the very last moment, Sophia just runs away when nobody's looking. She calls to Polina for last goodbye, and leaves on taxi, to continue living "free" life.
  • Wedding Episode: The episode everyone waited for — Gleb and Sophia's wedding. Unfortunately, things quickly goes to hell for everyone involved...
  • Wham Episode: Sophia dumps Gleb right on the day of their wedding, and runs away, ruining everything.
