Recap / The Interns S 11 E 15

Go To

Kisegach notices that Kupitman's office is completely in chaos and anarchy (people already starting complaining, hence her visit)... while Kupitman spends his time doing Thai massage, right in his office. Kisegach is fed up with this, and gives him an ultimatum: he has one day to fix this up, or she would kick him out of the hospital! Not knowing any other way to deal with his problem, Kupitman tries to ask Lyuba for help wit cleaning up his department. Since she's less than motivated, because his previous Head Nurse just suffered breakdown due to working under Kupitman, Kupitman lies to her that Bykov is in terrible mood today and she may suffer from him, unless she finds an excuse to escape for some time. As Lyuba knows nothing about Kupitman's workplace and its organisation, Kupitman is forced to always going with her and doing everything by himself, or at least consult her about everything, personally. Soon he starts locking up his office, only for her to still bothering him. Tired, Kupitman gives Lyuba cart-blanche: she may re-organise everything to her liking as long as she restores the order without bothering him, as he just wants to sleep. Lyuba does exactly that, and runs into conflict with the VIP patients, who were allowed to ignore some very important safety rules, which forces Kupitman to side with them over Lyuba in attempt to defuse the situation. Lyuba, disgusted with his sycophantic attempts to please the VIPs, quits working under him. Kupitman proceeds to the patients to apologise, only for them to accuse him of being a "bad servant" and demanding to clean after their bulldog Lancelot, who just peed on the floor. At this point, Kupitman realises that Lyuba was right, and snaps at them, loudly ordering them to get rid of the dog. In attempt to apologise, he organises for Lyuba the same Thai massage he himself had this morning — just in time for Kisegach to appear and call him out on the whole mess with the dog, whom he tolerated for a whole week before finally remembering about the rules.

Semyon got drunk on his night shift, and made a mess out of Gennadiy's on-call room, including one very large pink spot right in the middle of the room. Now, he must somehow clean it up, without calling orderlies, whom he enraged by his drunk insults. He thinks that he has no chance to clean up that large, sickly pink spot, but Gleb suggests to ask Phil, who can clean up or fix up anything, even if it seems hopeless, be it frying pan, clothes or chair which you need to construct from countless small details; he would take a "hopeless" task as a challenge! Unfortunately, Phil either misses their hints, or just doesn't fall for it. After several unsuccessful attempts to trick Phil into cleaning the spot for him, Semyon calls him again — and Phil reveals that he was perfectly aware of Semyon's attempt to exploit him; he's not the first one to use that scheme, and Phil now knows how it works! So nope, it wouldn't work again. But later, Phil decides to help Semyon after all... only for Lobanov to escape at the first opportunity, leaving him alone with the dirty spot.

Alexei is tired of Gleb and Sophia making up in his presence, and goes to Rita to wait it out. But Rita goes to Bykov and rats them out, so Bykov punishes them with a night shift. Predictably, Sophia thinks that it was Alexei who snitched on them. Since Gleb refused to believe that it was him, Sophia suggests to orchestrate another situation like this and test him. They proceeds with the plan, and again, it's Rita who snitches on them, costing them night shift — and again, it's Alexei who ends up being the main suspect due to rushing away from them. After being accused of being a snitch, Alexei calls Rita out on her snitching on Gleb and Sophia, and asks her to stop, in rather harsh words (despite her claiming that she did this to help him, given his bad reaction to them kissing near him). Rita takes those words badly, and when Alexei goes to apologise, she sees her crying. When he states that she's his best friend, it raises her mood so much that she kisses him... right in time for Bykov to appear. Bykov, as always being unable to do anything without making a show, sets up the "court", right in on-call room, to decide how to punish Rita and Alexey for not only violating Bykov's rules, but also badmouthing Gleb and Sophia, and decides to just give them the night shifts which were previously given to Gleb and Sophia — who are now free to go.

This episode provides examples of:

  • All for Nothing: Subverted; at first, it seems like Semyon's failed to trick Phil into cleaning a dirty spot for him, meaning that he wasted a full day without results. But in the very end (both of the day and the episode), Phil decides to help him after all. Phil has problems with actually cleaning all this, but Semyon rushes out at first opportunity, leaving Phil to deal with it by himself.
  • Batman Gambit: Phil used to be frequently tricked into doing someone's bidding by exploiting his inability to not jump at any "challenge" the people propose by stating that something is "impossible". As result, Phil eventually noticed the pattern, and scheme stopped working exactly on Semyon and his "impossible to clean" dirty spot. He does decide to help in the end, when Semyon still fails to deal with the spot, however.
  • Bookend: Kupitman's plot (and whole episode) starts with Kisegach calling him out on wasting time on Thai massage while his department is a mess — and stating that people complained about him. It ends with her arriving to call him out on another complaint (that one about his VIP patients and their dog), only to bust Kupitman and Lyuba doing Thai massage; the mess, however, is cleaned up by then.
  • Brick Joke: How Kupitman apologises before Lyuba? By organising for her the same Thai massage he had in the beginning of the episode.
  • Do Wrong, Right: When Kupitman receives another complaint, this time from his VIP patients, annoyed at him not following their agreement and treating their bulldog Lancelot with "respect", Kisegach calls him out not on receiving this complaint... but on that he received it only one week after their arrival, as it means that previously he had no problems with them blatantly violating the rules.
  • Entitled Bastard: Kupitman's VIP patients are very rude and egoistical. They've paid Kupitman to allow their bulldog, Lancelot, into the ward, and when Lyuba (who was not aware about this) goes into conflict with them over them breaching the rules, they accuses Kupitman of providing "bad service", and then demands him cleaning after Lancelot, who peed on the floor. In following Imagine Spot Kupitman somehow manages to exaggerate their jerkassery even further, dropping it straight into sadism territory.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Kupitman gives Lyuba cart-blanche on reorganising the Venereology to her liking as long as she may deal with it without bothering him. First thing she does is to jump into conflict with Kupitman's VIP patients, whom he allowed to bring their dog in their ward. Kupitman barely manages to defuse the situation... and goes into conflict with Lyuba, who finds his sycophantic attempts to please his VIP patients being disgusting, to the point that she decides to quit.
  • Imagine Spot: When Kupitman realises that he's indeed acting like a Sycophantic Servant, the scene gets shown, where Kupitman is a servant, and the VIPs are aristocrats who abuses him just for fun (one of them even kicks him).
  • Kangaroo Court: Bykov, in his typical manner, instead of just punishing Rita and Alexei for kissing on duty, makes it into "the court" where he plays the "judge", in his usual over-the-top manner. Of course, verdict is "guilty" and the two receives the same punishment as Gleb and Sophia initially.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Considering that Rita snitched on Gleb and Sophia for kissing on duty (something Bykov hates), her being busted with Alexei by Bykov himself (who proceeds to switch the punishment from Sophia and Gleb to Rita and Lyosha) seems rather karmic.
  • Lazy Bum: Kisegach is tired of Kupitman's hands-off approach to his job as the head of Venereology, so she gives him an ultimatum: either he improves and fixes all the mess in one day, or she would fire him. Kupitman brings Lyuba to "help" him... and drops all the work on her, so he may sleep.
  • Ship Tease: When Alexei, in attempt to comfort crying Rita, calls her his best friend, she impulsively kisses him.
  • Skewed Priorities: Kisegach notices that Kupitman's office is completely in chaos and anarchy (people already starting complaining, hence her visit)... while Kupitman spends his time doing Thai massage, right in his office. What he replies when she informs him of the situation and shows him the latest complaint? "Put it on the table, I would read after I finish".
  • Sycophantic Servant: When Kupitman sides with VIP patients (whom he allowed to blatantly breach major safety regulations by bringing up their bulldog Lancelot into the hospital) over Lyuba (who was not informed and reacted badly to it), Lyuba accuses him of being sycophantic lackey of anyone willing to pay him, without pride and conscience. When Kupitman tries to apologise before VIPs for Lyuba's behaviour, they accuses him of providing "bad service" for not following their every order, then orders him to clean after Lancelot, who peed on the floor. This is when Kupitman snaps, realising that Lyuba was right, and yells at them, ordering to get rid of the dog. Turns out that Kupitman does have some pride after all.
