Go To

"The Truth Will Out" is an episode in the first season of The Golden Girls.

Rose explains to her daughter why she has so little money to leave in her will.

Tropes:

  • Anti-Climax: In-Universe. Blanche considers the actual truth about Charlie's spent inheritance too lacking in drama.
  • Broken Pedestal: Kirsten's faith towards her mother took a dive after Rose tells her that she spent all their money left behind by Charlie.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Dorothy, Blanche, Sophia and Charley don't like Brussels sprouts.
  • Disappointed in You: Kirsten tells her mother Rose she's disappointed in her after she reveals that she spent all of Charlie's money (or at least claims to have spent it).
  • Exact Words: Sophia brags that she never lies, and when Dorothy challenges her, she gives an answer that technically proves her point:
Dorothy: Ma, how much did you lose at the dog track last week?
Sophia: None of your business, and that's the truth.
  • My New Gift Is Lame: When Kirsten arrives to the girls' residence, she gives a Maple Syrup/Honey/Brown Sugar/Molasses/Rice Krispie Log to Blanche and Dorothy each. Blanche and Dorothy do their best to pretend to like the present, until Kirsten and Charley are out of sight...
Blanche: What are you going to do with your gift?
Dorothy: It's a log. I'm going to burn it.
  • Nutritional Nightmare: Rose's Maple Syrup/Honey/Brown Sugar/Molasses/Rice Krispie Log. Rose makes one for her daughter's visit, mentioning she used to make it for her kids all the time when they were young.
Dorothy: (after taking a small piece of the Rice Krispie Log) Tell me, Rose, do any of your children still have their own teeth?
  • Oblivious Guilt Slinging: Charley, Rose's granddaughter, has made up an imaginary grandfather for her games. When she tells Rose about him, she explains that he's "very, very rich," unaware that Rose has been feeling guilty about lying about Charlie's success as a businessman.
  • The Power of Legacy: While making a will, Rose claims she lost all the savings Charlie had built up during his life, even though this causes a rift between her and her daughter. In truth, Rose just didn't want her daughter to know her father was a business failure with nothing to leave to them, but she comes clean late in the episode and she and Kirsten make up afterwards.
  • Rebuilt Pedestal: Rose manages to restore Kirsten's faith towards her after telling Kirsten the whole truth about Charlie's inheritance late in the episode.
  • Theme Naming: Lampshaded when Rose lists her plans to take her granddaughter to SeaWorld, Gator World, Reptile World, and Parrot Village.
Dorothy: What?! The parrots don’t get a world?! Oh, this is outrageous!
