A Plot: When Adam thinks he can harness some of Pop's luck, he ends up losing his toys on a gamble.
B Plot: Erica's dream to dance on a TV show is derailed when Barry gives her pink eye.
- All or Nothing: Beverly and Pops try to get Adam's toys back by talking to Principal Ball, who happens to be the father of the boy Adam lost his toys to. Ball offers to let Bev try to win them back, but she'll be banned from school grounds for a year if she loses. Beverly is confident that she'll win...and it cuts to her storming out of the office upset, at which point Pops steps in...and it cuts to him storming out of the office upset and without his good jacket.
- Born Lucky: Averted; Adam starts thinking this of himself when Pops encourages him, but he loses big, and it turns out Pops exaggerated his own luck to impress him.
- Broken Pedestal: Adam loses respect for Pops when it's revealed that he lied about his luck, but Murray repairs their relationship by telling Adam that Pops just wanted to be loved as much as Pops loves Adam.
- Distinction Without a Difference: Principal Ball enforces a no-gambling policy...but upon learning that it's his son that Adam lost his toys to, insists that it was a "Gentleman's Wager" and shouldn't have to forfeit his winnings.
- Hourglass Plot: As Barry's pink eye passes and he learns to dance, Erica's appearance and attitude get progressively worse. In the end, Barry makes sure Erica still attends the filming of Dance Party USA in their area, because he knows exactly what Erica feels like and doesn't want her to undergo the stress he regularly deals with.
- I Am Not Pretty: Catching pink eye leads to Erica having to wear her old Nerd Glasses instead of contacts, which then leads to a mouth injury and a bad hair job, leading her to think less of herself.
- In Another Man's Shoes: Thanks to reverting to her old appearance, Erica learns what it feels like to be considered a loser like her brother Barry.
- Laser-Guided Karma: In The Tag, Lainey ends up catching pink eye herself, in both eyes, after nearly abandoning a bad-looking Erica to be on Dance Party USA with her brother.
- Rousing Speech: Coach Mellor tries to lift Erica's spirits with a speech about how she's like a caterpillar that will transform into a beautiful butterfly...which completely fails, because he gives that speech to all of the "ugly" people, including Erica herself back when she started high school.
- She Cleans Up Nicely: This episode reveals that when she was younger, Erica had an unflattering hairdo, Nerd Glasses, and Pubescent Braces. Then she made herself up and is now considered among the hottest girls in school.
- Sick Episode: Barry gets pink eye, which he then passes to Erica, and later Lainey.
