Recap / The Goldbergs S 2 E 23 Bill Murray

Go To

A Plot: Murray is called in to Principal Ball's office along with his arch nemesis, Lainey's father Bill, because Barry and Lainey have been seen constantly kissing all over school. The enemies unexpectedly form a bond and become friends after discovering they have a lot in common, but this friendship is tested when Bill starts opening up emotionally.

B Plot: After seeing her kids watching MTV, Beverly recruits Adam to help Erica make a video application to Julliard, which is relatively close to home. But major obstacles get in the way of the video when Adam tries to make a big production out of it.

  • Be Yourself: After interrupting Erica's original audition tape to make a flashier production, and watching that fail, Bev admits that she pushed Erica in the wrong direction and encourages her to stay true to herself.
  • Hard Work Hardly Works: To try and dissuade Erica and Beverly from applying to Julliard, the school guidance counselor shows Bev a video of a cellist who wrote her own song, made her own cello, and is blind, and was still denied a Julliard education.
  • Men Don't Cry: The moment Bill starts getting sad about his ex-wife leaving him, Murray decides to end their friendship and starts avoiding him, not wanting to deal with any male sadness or "opening up" whatsoever.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Adam may have talent, but he's still young and inexperienced, so his attempt to make a video akin to a-ha's Take On Me is blatantly amateurish.
