After saying goodbye to Phoe-Phoe, the gang teams up with a pirate to cross a bay, where Callum tries to forge a connection with the sky arcanum. Meanwhile, Viren continues to communicate with the elf in the mirror, while Amaya and her soldiers clash with Sunfire elves at the border.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • Amplified Animal Aptitude: Berto the parrot is ridiculously well-trained, not only perfectly able to understand and use human speech but also competent in the handling of the ship.
  • Bait-and-Switch:
    • Villads named his ship the Ruthless... after his wife Ruth. Tragically, she doesn't like sailing.
    • After Zym is struck by lightning, Callum brings him back to the ship. Ezran and Rayla are horrified, thinking something bad has happened. But Zym turns out to be fine.
  • Big Damn Hug: Once Callum returns after almost considering endangering himself and Zym to learn how to connect to the Sky Arcanum, he soberly admits that he ultimately didn't have the guts to take the risk, but Rayla's only response is to gently says "Good" and hug him in relief.
  • Big Storm Episode: A massive storm happens that Callum attempts to use to connect to the sky arcanum.
  • Crucified Hero Shot: Callum lying on the ground in this posture after falling from the cliff.
  • Green Around the Gills: Rayla during the storm.
  • Handicapped Badass: Villads is blind, wearing eyepatches over both eyes. That doesn't stop him from expertly maneuvering his ship through a storm and between a series of jagged rocks.
  • Hope Spot: This episode juxtaposes Callum's efforts to make a connection to the Sky with Viren's efforts to communicate with the man in the mirror. As Callum says "I thought I wanted this badly enough, but in the end, I didn't have the guts" (which Rayla says is "good"). Viren seems to make a similar choice with the mirror in the next scene, refusing to follow through on the ritual to connect himself to Aaravos... but in the end, he does.
  • Just in Time: Rayla grabs Ezran and Zym in time before the two can fall off a cliff.
  • Loophole Abuse: Humans can't use primal magic because they lack a connection with each source's arcanum, which all magical creatures are born with. Once he learns of this, Callum quickly theorizes that there's nothing stopping humans from acquiring such a connection.
  • Meaningful Name: The Ruthless. Captain Villads named it after his wife, Ruth. Since she isn't fond of sailing, she's most likely never on the boat. Thus, Ruthless.
  • Necessary Drawback: Phoe-Phoe's power is bound to the Moon Nexus which means it cannot take the heroes all the way to their destination. Otherwise, the story would be over soon.
  • Saying Sound Effects Out Loud: In "Voyage of the Ruthless," the parrot Berto comments "Nailed it. Squawk!" and Ezran lampshades "Did he just say the word 'Squawk'?"

Good

While Callum views his decision to not risk his life for a potential chance at connecting to the Sky Arcanum as a failure, Rayla believes different.
