Recap / The Cleaner UKS 1 E 4 The Aristocrat

Go To

Wicky meets the owner of a posh house where a burglar has died. She tells him of famous visitors who have sat on her couch, including Winston Churchill.

Tropes:

  • Berserk Button: Do not stand on Vivinne's couch. Winston Churchill once sat on it.
  • Big "NO!": Wicky lets one out as Vivienne falls down the stairs near the end of the episode.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Wicky sets the "cleaning supplies" (read: beef vermilion) down on the stairs — the same thing Vivienne slips on.
  • Cool Car: Vivienne owns an Aston Martin Lagonda. Which she only uses to drive to the shops.
  • Cool Old Lady: Vivian initially comes across as this, given that she stood up to a burglar who was armed with a knife. Subverted, though, when it's revealed that after he fell down the stairs, she could have helped him ... but chose instead to kill him.
  • Disappointed by the Motive: Wicky is appalled when he learns that Vivienne killed a man not so much for breaking in as for vandalizing her sofa.
  • Every Man Has His Price: In return for his silence, Wicky is very tempted by Vivienne's offer to give him her Aston Martin, and pay for the insurance. He only gives the keys back after she dies.
  • Large Ham: Vivienne, especially this line when she describes her sofa: "When we heard that my father had fallen in Normandy... (wailing) I HAVE MOURNED ON THIS VERY SOFA!!!"
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Vivienne, who is revealed to have killed the burglar with a golf club after he fell down the stairs, falls down the stairs herself ... and dies.
  • Perilous Old Fool: Sir James, who injures himself breaking into Vivienne's house — which he did to prove that the police hadn't properly repaired the damage done to the window by the burglar.
  • The Reveal: Using his knowledge of blood spatter patterns, Wicky is able to pick up on something the police missed, and deduce that the burglar didn't die as a result of falling down the stairs.
  • What You Are in the Dark: Wicky is given the possibility of having Vivienne's Aston Martin as a bribe for keeping quiet about her having committed murder. He is very tempted, but ultimately declines.
