Tropes featured in this episode:

  • Crazy Jealous Guy: The man whose wife Barney insults in the newspaper has a reputation for this. When Barney tries to steal the newspaper from his doorstep, he thinks Barney is trying to see his wife. Luckily, rather than demand an explanation, the man just tells Barney to Get Out!.
  • May–December Romance: Barney is talking about this with Aunt Bee when they see a couple with a major age gap between them. He half-jokingly suggests the woman is a Gold Digger, which ends up making it to the newspaper forcing Barney to try to save himself before the woman's violent husband sees it.
  • Nap-Inducing Sermon: One of the stories Opie publishes is from an off-hand comment Andy had made about Rev. Tucker. The pastor doesn't take too kindly to the criticism of him being "dry as dust."
  • Not So Above It All: After Andy, Barney, and Aunt Bee teaches Opie a lesson about not writing hurtful stories about people in the newspaper, they separately go to the city dump after learning that Opie and his friend printed another run of papers like the first one but threw them away after Andy told them not to print any more papers like it. When Andy, Barney, and Aunt Bee bump into each other at the dump, they lie to each other saying that they wanted to make sure the papers were destroyed, only to find them and excitedly read them.
  • Tastes Like Feet: Aunt Bee's remark about dear friend Mrs. Foster chicken a la king tasting "like wallpaper waste" makes it into the newspaper ... leaving both Aunt Bee very angry and looking for a way to salvage a long-standing friendship over a remark she thought was private.
  • Worst News Judgment Ever: Opie, when he listens in on private conversations and takes conversations out of context and publishes them in his newspaper.
