The Generation Gap: Crusty old Mayberry Union High principal Mr. Hampton objects to the play Helen is directing because of its contemporary ideas. She and her students then stage a series of musical numbers from the 1920s – the era when Hampton grew up – and points out that even his older, more conservative generation (and those before him) had their severe critics as well. She then points out that being a teenager in any generation is often a confusing, frightening time and they need the understanding and guidance of loving elders. Mr. Hampton gets the hint and allows what’s ultimately a successful show to go on.
