Recap / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2012 S 4 E 23 Tokka Vs The World

Go To

Tokka finds her way to Earth after searching the cosmos, and determined to find her baby, goes on a rampage.

  • Badass Normal: Griffin is able to keep Bishop on his toes and seems to have the upper hand for a time.
  • Breather Episode: It has its action and drama, but the stakes are much lower than the intense last three episodes.
  • The Bus Came Back:
    • Tokka turns out to still be alive, and has finally found her way to Earth to find Chompy Picasso, and her impending arrival alerts the Earth and the EPF.
    • Also, Utrom Bishop, now known as Agent Bishop, returns as well as an ambassador to to the Utroms for the Earth Protection Force, who appear for the first time since Season 3.
  • Friendly Tickle Torture: Raph affectionately does this to Chompy all throughout the episode. Chompy does this at one point to Raph as well.
  • General Ripper: General Griffin refuses to listen to any of Bishop's counsel and is extremely gung-ho about attacking the Turtles, Tokka, and Bishop himself.
  • Heel Realization: Implied. After Raph explains to Tokka that his reason for taking Chompy with him to Earth was because he and the other thought she was dead, Tokka's pupils widen, realizing that Raph's intentions were pure. It helps calm her down and grants Raph her permission to continue raising Chompy (until he's old enough to return home).
  • Mama Bear: Tokka is one. She's traveled through the cosmos for Chompy and will let nothing stop her. She only backs down when she notices that Raphael and Chompy have bonded.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Early in the episode, the Turtles and Casey are standing idly in a TCRI elevator. While they wait, Mikey begins beatboxing and tapping his nunchucks together to make a beat, in a clear reference to the 2014 film.
    • Tokka being Chompy's mother becomes this when you realize Tokka's first word in Secret of the Ooze was "mama". You can easily imagine Chompy even calling her that when he finally sees her again.
  • Now What?: Splinter and Raph both acknowledge that one day, Chompy will have to return to space due to being destined to grow to be a gigantic monster (though when Mikey brought it up earlier, Raph did downplay it, saying it would probably take "100 space-years."
  • Shout-Out: A Kaiju-focused episode wouldn't be complete without some.
    • The shot of people fleeing in the streets from Tokka's flames upon her arrival, with one hapless man frozen in his car, bear resemblance to the initial assault during Independence Day.
    • Tokka's massive eye passing by the people watching from the office building's window bears resemblance to a similar scene in the 1998 American remake of Godzilla.
    • Donnie quips "missed it by that much".
    • Carlos Chiang O'Brien Gambe signs off with the line "Stay classy, New York".
  • Sparing the Final Mook: When Griffin's soldiers attempt to arrest Bishop, he easily beats them. The last soldiers panics and tries to surrender and Bishop points to the ground to indicate that the soldier should pretend as though Bishop knocked him out too. After taking a second or two to understand what Bishop is trying to say, the soldier fakes a cry of pain and falls to the floor as though Bishop beat him like the rest of the soldiers.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Despite Bishop's advice and previous contributions to the American military, Griffin and the American government still see Tokka as a major potential threat.
