Recap / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987) S03E47 "The Big Blow Out"

Go To

The Turtles may think they had rendered the Technodrome harmless, but they had only delayed Krang and Shredder's attack.

Tropes:

  • Batman Gambit:
    • To get the Turtles off the Technodrome, Krang attempts to blast a missile at Mount Rushmore. Sure enough, the Turtles jump onto the missile in order to save the monument.
    • Leonardo, Michaelangelo, and Splinter lure the Technodrome piloted by the vengeful Shredder into position so that Donatello and Raphael could launch through the portal into Dimension X.
  • Call-Back: When they are in Dimension X, a reference to "Mr Ogg Goes to Town" is made when Shredder reassures Krang that ending up in Dimension Z could have been worse.
  • Deflector Shields: The Technodrome uses these when fired at by the US army.
  • The Juggernaut: The Technodrome proves this when finally moving. It rams through mountain, and the US army isn't able to put a dent in it.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: The villain's plan to transport the Earth to Dimension X goes up in smoke thanks to Shredder attempting to get revenge on the turtles for humiliating him. By taking control of the Technodrome, he attempts to kill them, this causes them to get shot through the portal by a missile from Raphael and Donatello underneath, followed by them getting attacked by General Tragg's army. Had Shredder just waited until Earth went through the portal, the villains would have succeeded.
  • Series Fauxnale: It's implied that this was going to be the final episode of the show, or at least was written to serve as one in case it wasn't renewed, this being the syndication-important 65th episode; the Turtles defeat Shredder and Krang, foil their plans to send the earth to Dimension X and then launch them and the Technodrome through the portal and trap them there and they are finally accepted and labelled as heroes by the public.
  • Something We Forgot: When the Turtles leap onto Krang's missile to divert it from Mount Rushmore, they inadvertently leave Master Splinter behind. It's not until they're back at the Turtle Van that they feel something was missing, and it takes them a few moments to realize it's their sensei.
  • Villain Ball: Shredder grabs it near the end. After the fight with Splinter and the turtles, he takes control of the Technodrome and goes after the turtles in revenge for humiliating him just as Earth is about to go through the portal to Dimension X. This backfires as Raphael and Donatello, while underneath the Technodrome, use a missile to shoot the villains through the portal, getting the technodrome damaged from General Tragg's army and trapped in Dimension X in the process. Splinter has even lampshaded that it would be Shredder's undoing.
