Recap / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987) S02E03 "It Came from Beneath the Sewers"

Go To

After discovering that a mutant plant has had its growth accelerated by the first fragment of the Eye of Sarnoth, Shredder unleashes it on the city to attack the Turtles. Meanwhile, April is lured into a trap by Shredder, and is immediately captured. However, the Turtles disguise themselves as pizza delivery boys and free her, though Shredder escapes, again, with the fragment, while the Turtles must destroy the mutant plant that is wreaking havoc on the city.

Tropes

  • Adorably Precocious Child: The kids are "children of the 80's" and haggle with April over her buying the crystal off of them.
  • Artistic License – Botany: April claims that the plant she gives the turtles at the end of the episode is a Venus Flytrap. Thing is, it looks nothing like a Venus Flytrap. It looks more like a cross between an unbloomed rose and a Pirahna Plant. Also, venus flytraps aren't exactly the kind of plants that actively bite whatever's in-front of it, often passively waiting for a bug to crawl into its open maw before clamping shut.
  • Contrived Coincidence: When the turtles ask Splinter for advice when their tracker runs out of juice, he believes that the answer will come in time. He's right, considering Shredder's mutant plant monster crashes through their wall a moment later.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: The turtles track the trail of green goo from the plant, which then disappears at a dead-end.
Raphael: There's something really weird going down here!
  • From Bad to Worse: After the Turtles rescue April, Shredder and Baxter make their getaway. And then, they saw on the TV that the mutant plant is erupting through the streets.
  • Make My Monster Grow: When the crystal touches residue from Dimension X on Shredders boot, it triggers a mutation that creates a plant monster.
  • Mistaken Identity: The carnival manager mistakes the Turtles for his clowns and complains that they're late.
"Next time, leave those corny turtle suits home!"
  • Mundane Utility: Michelangelo manages to win a dozen teddy bears at a ball-throwing carnival game using his nunchucks.
  • Pun: The turtles remark that they've passed a flea-circus while furiously scratching their shells.
  • Sarcastic Confession: The Shredder is oddly honest when he steals the crystal from a kid.
Red-Haired Boy: Hey, where'd you come from?
Shredder: If you must know, from Dimension X in a far-off galaxy.
  • Tempting Fate: The turtles go into the carnival without disguises, reasoning that they'll blend in with the carnies. Wouldn't know know it, they're confused for a couple of clowns by an irate carnie and dragged off to perform.
  • Wouldn't Hurt a Child: April and Turtles spot two boys with the crystal. They know attacking them isn't an option.
Raphael: What do we do, knock them out and grab it?
