Recap / Superman And Lois S 3 E 1 Closer

Go To

Lois thinks she may be pregnant, while Superman contends with an old foe who has suddenly gained superpowers.

Tropes:

  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Both boys opt to go to bed rather than listening to the story of their birth from Clark and Lois again.
  • Bedmate Reveal: After the party, Kyle is seen asleep in his bed. Then Chrissy pops up from behind him.
  • Black Sheep: According to his sister, the late John Henry of this Earth is the only one from their family's long line of military service to misuse his expertise and reputation to sell arms to criminals.
  • The Bus Came Back: Henry Miller, the Atom-Man, returns since being last seen in a flashback in Season One. Even more, he's Taken A Level In Badass.
  • Destructive Saviour: Jordan almost makes a crane accident worse by using his heat vision, with Clark having to step in.
  • Did You Just Have Sex?: Lana can tell Clark and Lois have been intimate recently when he mentions their relationship is doing really well. Lois and Clark also clearly suspect something when Chrissy makes herself very conspicuous arriving for work following her hookup with Kyle.
  • He Knows Too Much: Henry is killed before Superman can talk him into revealing what was done with him.
  • Identical Stranger: Bruno Mannheim is portrayed by the same actor that played Tobias Church in Arrow.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Coach Gaines might still be angry with Jon for screwing up his Football program and he deducted points for attitude, but still passes his driver test.
  • Master of Illusion: Onomatopoeia is able to make Superman think he's hearing dangerous situations happening all around him, but when he flies up to investigate, there's nothing happening.
  • Mythology Gag: Superman has a training program in his Fortress of Solitude and has Jordan face off against the Atomic Skull.
  • No Social Skills:
    • Chrissy is amazingly embarassing while giving Jon a present in front of his friends, as well as while trying to sneak away after hooking up with Kyle.
    • Sam apologizes to Nat for using their horror movie night to try to recruit her for the DOD's academy and tells her that he is just not good with people, asking her for another chance, which she accepts.
  • Rogues' Gallery Transplant: Onomatopoeia is a Green Arrow villain but confronts Superman in the show and will presumably have more confrontations with him later into the season.
  • Sexual Karma: Clark and Lois spend some time in the sack in the beginning of the episode, clearly relaxing after the events of Season Two.
  • Time Skip: Lois' opening narration confirms it takes place 27 days since the events of the Season Two finale.
  • Title Drop: Both Lois's voice-over at the beginning of the episode and Bruno Mannheim at the end say that they're "getting closer".
  • Vagueness Is Coming: Former mayor George Dean vaguely threatens Lana for moving funds earmarked for something else to help the high school's black mold problem, telling her that she is meddling with things she doesn't understand.
  • Wham Line: After already being excited to have another child, the doctor calls Lois and tells her that she is not pregnant, indicating that she might have a health issue instead.
  • Wham Shot: Before Henry can try and kill Superman, Onomatopoeia appears and kills Henry, then somehow is able to confuse Superman enough to escape with Henry's body before learning the fight landed them in West Metropolis, derogatorily called "Suicide Slums".
  • Your Days Are Numbered: Henry Miller had a brain tumor and only weeks to live.
