Recap / Sailor Moon Ep 39 Paired With A Monster Mako The Ice Skating Queen

Go To

Kunzite uses a figure skating pair to set a trap to find Sailor Moon, using Princess Serenity's skills on the ice as a clue. They figure that Mako must be Sailor Moon as she is the best skater out of all the Sailor Guardians.

Tropes:

  • Beneath Suspicion: The two Russian skaters dismiss Usagi as Sailor Moon, due to her being too clumsy for their picture.
  • Break-Up/Make-Up Scenario: Misha and Janelyn begin the episode ready to end their partnership, but being brainwashed by Kunzite and turning into a dividual Youma out of jealousy restores their flow.
  • Dub Name Change: Janelyn becomes “Janelle” in the DIC dub, likely because the latter is more recognisably a Russian name.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: Misha assumes that Makoto must be Sailor Moon due to how graceful she is as a skater. Boy is he off,
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Tuxedo Mask aids the Sailors against the Youma due to his disdain for Kunzite’s use of the Villain-Possessed Bystander trope.
  • Hidden Depths: Makoto turns out to be an excellent figure skater, which Artemis attributes to her subconscious Past-Life Memories.
  • Informed Ability: The Moon Princess was a great ice skater during the Silver Millennium. Usagi proceeds to emphasis the “was” part of the sentence.
  • Immediate Self-Contradiction: In the DIC dub, Lita says that Misha’s hair is a lot like her old boyfriend Freddy, before stating that it’s a lot nicer than Freddy’s because Freddy dumped her.
  • National Stereotypes: The two figure skaters at the heart of the plot are Russian.
