Recap / Sailor Moon Crystal Ep 04 Masquerade - Dance Party

Go To

There is an iconic figure in Tokyo: Princess D, of the Kingdom of D. She has appeared to reveal the treasure of the Kingdom of D for the first time. The legendary jewel has piqued the interest of the Sailor Guardians, the Dark Kingdom, and Tuxedo Mask. They all go to investigate the princess and the jewel: could they be the Princess of the Moon Kingdom and the Legendary Silver Crystal, respectively?

Tropes used in this episode:

  • Adaptation Dye-Job: Princess D is blonde. She was originally brunette in the earlier anime, as to possibly make her look like a female Umino. It is entirely possible that Naoko intended her to be blonde in the manga, however.
  • Artistic License – Physics: Falling from the balcony, Usagi and Tuxedo Mask take long enough for Luna to shout out to use the transformation pen, and Usagi to make an umbrella out of it in a two to three story drop. The fall should only have taken a single second.
  • Bowdlerization: In the original manga, Usagi falls asleep because she accidentally drank alcohol, thinking it was juice. Here, Usagi's just tired from fighting (and presumably dancing).
  • Dance of Romance: Tuxedo Mask asks Usagi to dance, and the two of them share a romantic moment laden with sparkling shoujo bubbles.
  • Dude, She's Like in a Coma: Finding Sailor Moon asleep on the balcony, Tuxedo Mask steals a kiss. Luna does not approve.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Makoto, or Sailor Jupiter, makes her appearance at the end of this episode.note
  • The Glasses Gotta Go: Played straight with Princess D, who turns out to be quite pretty without her Nerd Glasses. The Imagine Spot where the Senshi wonder if it's the same with Umino has been cut...though it does get discussed, as if we just have to wait and see.
  • Literal Cliff Hanger: When the possessed Princess D shoves Usagi off of a balcony, both she and Tuxedo Mask end up dangling for dear life.
  • Parasol Parachute: Usagi turns her disguise pen into a parasol to save herself and Tuxedo Mask when they fall from the balcony.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Jadeite is revealed to have survived Act 3, which he did not do in the original manga.
  • A Storm Is Coming: In this case, the weather turning stormy at the end of the episode heralds Sailor Jupiter's imminent awakening.
