Recap / SMG4: SMG4 vs Content Farms

Go To

This is the greatest battle SMG4 has ever had to face...

A channel called Gooby4 is making cringey content farms out of SMG4's videos, so when all legal (and illegal) means to take him down fail, he and Mario dive deep into the kiddish, saturated world of Gooby in hopes to end the dilemma themselves. When Mario falls prey to the sickeningly childish world, SMG4 must continue solo.

Tropes:

  • Assimilation Plot: Because Mario vibes too much with Gooby4's videos, he eventually gets assimilated into the channel's cast. Thankfully, SMG4 manages to snap him out of it by the end of the episode.
  • Company Cross References: Characters from The Amazing Digital Circus are among those featured on Gooby4's show—fitting, considering the cartoon has been milked by content farms in real life.
  • Confronting Your Imposter: The plot of the episode is Mario and SMG4 dealing with a pesky content farm creator who goes by Gooby4, even diving deep into his videos to stop him.
  • Head-in-the-Sand Management: Despite being repeatedly presented with proof of SMG4's content being stolen for the sake of cheaply-made videos, YouTube refuses to do anything about it, retreating without a word every time SMG4 approaches them.
  • Narrative Profanity Filter: Gooby4's channel doesn't allow guns or swearing due to being (allegedly) for kids, so both of them are censored as an in-universe form of Bowdlerization.
  • Pet the Dog: Despite enjoying the videos, Mario is very cooperative with SMG4 in taking down Gooby4's channel. He's also genuinely remorseful when his hiring of John Wick to take out Gooby4 results in SMG4 getting whacked instead due to the identity impersonation by the former.
  • Riddle for the Ages: Who is Gooby4?
  • Shout-Out: After YouTube does absolutely nothing about the content farms stealing SMG4's content, he's later seen contemplating his next move. He does this by Finger-Tenting and wearing a pair of Scary Shiny Glasses. In other words, the infamous Gendo Pose.
  • Take That!:
    • The whole episode serves as a takedown of mass-produced "content farm" videos that crank out bizarre, shoddy "children's" videos with licensed characters as fast as possible. Especially taking into account the then-recent content farm videos using characters from The Amazing Digital Circus, another show created by Glitch Productions.
    • YouTube once again finds itself in SMG4's crosshairs, this time in regards to their lackluster support regarding cases such as above.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Johnny, a character created by Gooby4, drops his child-friendly act and swears revenge on SMG4 when he is trapped under a burning train.
