Recap / Ren And Stimpy3x 10 Lair Of The Lummox

Go To

In their role as hosts of Untamed World, Ren and Stimpy welcome the viewer to their newest episode, which recounts their recent expedition to observe the rare Lummox, a humanoid beast that once roamed the world in vast herds, but which can now only be seen in Darkest Ignoramia

After months of searching, they follow a trail of droppings to a male Freckled Redneck or "Booger Red" Lummox. Initially hoping to observe without interacting with him, that plan changes when Ren accidentally breaks some sticks, forcing them to instead mimic the Lummox's behavior in hopes of earning his trust. A hearty session of nose-picking, followed by Stimpy's expertise at butt-scratching, pays dividends, and the Lummox shares his food with them. They groom their hair with pork chops and rub mashed potatoes on their belly, further endearing themselves to him, but when he offers them a platter of giblets, Stimpy enrages the Lummox by refusing on grounds of his vegetarianism. As it begins to work itself into a fighting fury, Ren orders Stimpy to consume a bucket of lard. This act calms the creature, which decides that the two must be his cousins. Happy again, he takes them to his home (a hollow log), where they spend the night watching television.

The next morning, Stimpy simulates a Lummox mating call, raspberrying into a corned beef sandwich, hoping to give the two nature hosts (and thus the viewers) a look at the Lummox mating ritual. A second Lummox, identified as a Tree Lummox, emerges from the woods and marks its territory with its ripped-up underwear. However, unexpectedly, the Booger Red Lummox emerges from his home and begins to compete with the Tree Lummox, placing his underwear next to the newcomer's.

A Lummox Cow emerges from the wilderness, with Ren and Stimpy watching excitedly. She picks the Tree Lummox, based on his underwear's stickiness, and is further impressed with the flaunting of his buttock cleavage as a mating symbol akin to a peacock's tail. But the Booger Red refuses to give up without a fight, and the two males begin to joust. First, the Tree Lummox ripples his ample gut in an impossibly fluid manner. The Booger Red counters by placing a pen on his stomach and flexing his fat so it launches the pen at the Tree Lummox's face. Then a Burping Contest ensues, with the Booger Red taking the victory by belching a quote of Abraham Lincoln's most famous speech.

The Tree Lummox slinks away in defeat, and the Lummox Cow grabs the Booger Red and drags him off into the wilderness as her mate.

In the full version of the episode, Stimpy and Ren return to their main studio, with Ren declaring that whilst the courtship behavior of the Lummoxes may seem bizarre to viewers, they are all part of nature. Stimpy promptly plays the Lummox mating call again, and a group of male Lummoxes suddenly show up in the studio, affectionately hugging the two nature hosts.

Lair of the Lummox includes examples of:

  • Berserk Button: Lummoxes hate vegetarians, and Stimpy claiming to be one causes the previously affable Booger Red to start working himself into a frenzy, beating on his chest like a gorilla and foaming at the mouth as he gets ready to attack.
  • Brawn Hilda: The Lummox Cow is just as big, fat, burly and ugly as the male Lummoxes.
  • Burping Contest: The Lummox males complete their duel over the Cow by seeing who is capable of the most impressive belch. The Booger Red belching A-G is countered by the Tree Lummox belching the word "Jugular", but the Booger Red's ability to belch Abraham Lincoln's "Four-score and seven years ago" quote earns him the victory.
  • Gross-Up Close-Up: Naturally, the episode features plenty of zoomed in looks at the repulsive features of the Lummoxes.
  • Hillbilly Incest: Implied when a redneck refers to his wife as "Sister Momma" and she calls him "Brother Daddy".
  • Human Subspecies: The Lummoxes are human (if gross, stupid and ugly), but are treated as a kind of animal. They are also mentioned to be "part of the Oaf family".
  • Humans Are Bastards: Played for Black Comedy. In the opening scenes, Stimpy notes that the Lummoxes have been hunted to near-extinction for their precious... armpit foam, reducing them to a rare remnant population on the remote island of Ignoramia.
  • Irony: Ren waxing poetic about how beautiful and lovely the Booger Red Lummox is as the cartoon gives a series of Gross Up Close Ups.
  • No Ending: In one version of the episode, the Lummox Cow grabs the Booger Red and carries him off, and then the episode immediately shifts into an advert for "Colonel Backwash's Chicken in a Drawer", cutting out the sequence of Ren and Stimpy back in their studio from the full version of the episode
  • Wildlife Commentary Spoof: The second such spoof in the series, and it's even tied to the same faux-documentary show as in season 1's "Untamed World".
