Go To

"The Pageant of Grandmas" is an episode in the fourth season of Reba.

Jake signs Reba up in "the pageant of grandmas", the upcoming school fundraiser, but Barbra Jean decides that she wants to be the one entering it instead after catching wind of the event. Reba decides to drop out, only to change her mind after Kyra informs her that Jake wanted her to be the contestant instead, and so Reba and Barbra Jean compete for the spot.

Tropes seen in this episode include:

  • Beauty Contest: The grandmother variant, hence "the pageant of grandmas".
  • Bring It: Barbra Jean says this to Reba after Reba decides to go for the contestant spot after all.
Barbra Jean: Well, bring it on, peaches. Bring! It! On!
  • Brutal Honesty: Reba's attempt at stand-up comedy is met with criticism, more so from Van than from Cheyenne.
Van: "Boo! You suck!" I'm sorry, Mrs. H, but that's what they do at the clubs.
Cheyenne: OK, Mom, no offense, but I really — I don't think stand-up is your thing.
  • Dramatic Pause: Reba's reactive statement about her pageant dress is: "I feel over-dressed... for Vegas."
  • Eye Take: Reba has this reaction upon Jake saying that he signed her up for the "the pageant of grandmas" fundraiser.
  • Sexy Slit Dress: Reba wears a that comes with a leg slit on the night of the pageant.
  • Title Drop: "Pageant of grandmas" is the title for this episode, and Jake mentions a "pageant of grandmas" being the upcoming school fundraiser.
  • Training Montage: Reba's and Barbra Jean's respective training sessions as pageant contestant are presented this way, with "Gonna Fly Now" from Rocky being played out throughout the sequence. Cheyenne and Van are Reba's coaches, while Barbra Jean hones her skills in Brock's presence.
  • Ventriloquism: Reba does a ventriloquist act briefly during the Training Montage. The words are muted out during the stunt, while the background music plays on.
