Recap / Raising Dion S 2 E 3 Monster Problem

Go To

Brayden and Dion become close friends, but Brayden doesn't seem to have the best intentions in mind. Meanwhile, Esepranza auditions for the school musical, and David Marsh secretly recruits Pat to investigate the sinkhole.

Tropes

  • Botanical Abomination: The spores from the glowing plants in the sinkhole turn people into this. As of this episode, Nicole is infected with the spores as well.
  • Evil Is Cool: Invoked Brayden tries to convince Dion of this, and Dion admits he has a point since villains always get the best lines in stories.
  • Insistent Terminology: When David calls Pat a comic book geek while bribing him with some comic books, Pat states he prefers the term "aficionado", because people like David rarely use the word geek or nerd in a possitive way.
  • Journey to the Center of the Mind: Brayden uses his powers to pull Dion into his mind and show him the farm he grew up on, as well as his father and mother.
  • Hopeless Auditionees: Most of the kids auditioning for the musical are clearly not cut out for the role.
  • Internal Reveal: Dion finds out that Pat is still alive after Brayden spots Pat outside the school and alerts Dion.
  • Performance Anxiety: Esperanza suffers from this and wants to bail out of the audition, but Dion and Jonathan convince her to try anyway.
  • Pstandard Psychic Pstance: As they discuss Brayden's powers, Dion puts his hands on his head in this manner and pretends to use telepathy, but Brayden informs him he doesn't actually have to do this in order to use his powers.
  • The Reveal: Pat is still superpowered, and David is clearly working on his own agenda since he lies to Suzanne about this and then goes behind her back to recruit Pat.
  • Secret-Keeper: Brayden insists that Dion keeps the fact he has powers a secret, even from Jonathan and Esperanza.
  • Self-Duplication: While inside Brayden's mindscape, Brayden has this power. He makes two duplicates of himself, and while Dion tries to figure out which of them is the real Brayden, the real Brayden shows up behind him.
  • Title Drop: Nicole names the episodes title after her encounter with the plant monster in the sinkhole.
