Recap / Raising Dion S 2 E 4 With Friends Like These

Go To

Dion invites Brayden over for a playdate, but it seems Brayden has other plans. Meanwhile, Nicole's encounter with the plant monster at the sinkhole has left her with a nasty scratch, that quickly gets infected.

Tropes

  • Asshole Victim: A non-lethal example; Brayden encourages Dion to use his powers to get back at two bullies. Dion does so by using his telepathy to levitate a branch and smack one of the bullies in the back with it, causing him to think his friend did it, resulting in a fist fight.
  • The Corrupter:
    • Brayden actively tries to pursue Dion to use his powers for selfish gains. While Dion agrees with him when getting revenge on 2 bullies, he draws the line when he sees Brayden kill a dog with his powers.
    • The final shot of the episode reveals The Crooked Man is this to Brayden, actively pitting him against Dion by feeding him lies.
  • Godzilla Threshold: Nicole's infection baffles Biona scientists, and it's also spreading to other people. Since it seems to be connected to the power Pat felt in the Sinkhole, and the remaining Crooked Man energy within Pat, Pat might be the only one that can find a cure. Thus, with great reluctance, Suzanne allows Pat to leave his cell and get access to Bion's laboratory.
  • Internal Reveal: Brayden learns that Pat used to be the Crooked Man, and killed Brayden's father.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Janelle accidently causes a huge explosion in the BIONA facility when another teen startles her. Her mom later tells Nicole how Janelle caused similar explosion at the science lab at school.
  • The Plague: Nicole is the second victim of the mysterious spores after the security guard from #201, and at the end of the episode we see the spores are rapidly spreading, infecting people all over Atlanta.
  • Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: Brayden mind controls Kate into forgetting he was at Dion's house, and later kills a dog by shutting down it's brain.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility: Dion firmly believes in this, and even brings up Spider-Man when countering Braydens arguments that they shouldn't use their powers to do whatever they want.
  • With Friends Like These...: The episode is even named after this trope, as a good portion of the plot focusses on Brayden trying to corrupt Dion.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Dion encourages Esperanza to go through with the musical, even now that she has been given a starring role rather than just being in the choir like she wanted. He calls her singing talent her superpower.
  • You Killed My Father: Brayden learns the Crooked Man, when he was still with Pat, killed his father, and calls him out for this. The Crooked Man however claims that was all Pat's doing, and that Pat did it because he was weak.
