Ash, Iris, and Cilan have a run-in with Shamus, Tepig's former trainer. Shamus is trying to use battles to claim more powerful pokemon. Tepig is called into battle to face Shamus, and ends up with a few tricks up his sleeve.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Adults Are Useless: Shamus talks about how he abandoned Tepig, right in front of Don George. Don George doesn't do anything except suggest a battle between Ash and Shamus, and later just officiates the match.
  • An Aesop: There are two:
    • Know your worth.
    • How negative/toxic people feel about you shouldn't affect how you feel about yourself.
  • Bait the Dog: A heroic version of this happens. Shamus offers Pignite a spot on his team. In response, Pignite smiles with excitement, making it look like it was willing to join Shamus again. Pignite then stares at Shamus moments before using flamethrower on him.
  • Burning with Anger: The Pokedex notes that a Pignite's internal fire gets more intense if it's angered. Considering how easily Ash's newly-evolved Pignite dispatches his former trainer's team, you could understand if he was really pissed off.
  • Contrasting Sequel Antagonist: Shamus to Damien and Paul. All three of them are massive Jerkasses who abandoned their fire-type starters that Ash subsequently trained, but Shamus proves to be the worst of the three. Damien was a smug little startup trainer who's own psychological manipulation of Charmander caused him to develop loyalty issues when he evolved into Charmeleon and Charizard, and Paul just threw Chimchar away when he wasn't performing to his rigorously high standards, but Shamus mixes those two's attributes and shows why he's the most despicable trainer of them all.
  • Courtroom Episode: Parodied. Cilan is also a "Judge Connoisseur", so he holds a courtroom session to determine if Shamus was in the right to abandoned Tepig, with Ash as the prosecution and Shamus as the defense.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Shamus' rationalization that abandoning Tepig was "for its own good" calls to mind similar tactics by real-life domestic abusers.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: Ash’s Snivy attempts to snap Tepig out of his funk by slapping him in the face with Vine Whip.
  • Hate Sink: Shamus. Between him abandoning Tepig, being an emotionally manipulative bastard, and him trying to swipe his opponents Pokémon when he curb-stomped him, he has no redeeming qualities to him whatsoever like with Damien—Paul, at least, had some redeeming traits to him.
  • Heroic BSoD: Poor Tepig goes through this regarding his past trainer, especially in one point during the battle when Shamus made it clear that he faked sadness to convince him. Tepig's horrified reaction says it all, including the screen cracking in half, and he completely gives up afterwards. The dub makes it even worse, Marc Thompson's delivery doesn't just makes it sound like he's extremely horrified, but pretty much heartbroken and like he's screaming a Big "WHAT?!" or a Big "NO!". Thankfully, he gets over it at the end of the episode after it evolves into Pignite.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Snivy takes a super-effective combo move in Tepig's place, getting defeated, but inspiring the pig to take a stand against Shamus and evolve into Pignite in the process.
  • History Repeats: Like with Charizard and Infernape before it, Pignite manages to get revenge on the Jerkass who abandoned it and give him a well-deserved flamethrower to the face.
  • Humiliation Conga: Everything goes downhill for Shamus after Tepig evolves into Pignite. Not only does he lose the battle, but when trying to get Pignite to return to his team, he gets a face full of flamethrower, resulting in an ash face and frazzled hair.
  • Jerkass: Shamus. Not only did he gladly admit to abandoning Tepig, but he also tries to take another trainer's Pokemon after winning a match at the beginning of the episode.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Tepig evolves into Pignite and knocks out both of Shamus's Pokemon. Afterwards, Shamus tries to recruit Pignite to rejoin him. Pignite sees through his deception and scorches his head with flamethrower, sending him away in vain.
  • Mythology Gag: Iris getting angry and confronting Shamus for abandoning Tepig is an obvious replica of the time when Brock confronted Damien about abandoning Charmander.
  • The Power of Friendship: This was what encouraged Tepig to fight for Snivy & Ash & for it to evolve into Pignite and annihilate Shamus’ Pokemon.
  • Rejected Apology: Shamus "apologizes" to Pignite for calling it a talentless pokemon and offers Pignite a spot back on his team (to add insult, he brings up the fact that Pignite wasn't about to forget about him). Pignite responds by burning him.
  • Replacement Goldfish: It's implied that Shamus' Emboar is the Pokemon he caught to replace Tepig after abandoning him.
  • The Sociopath: Shamus abandons his Tepig by tying it to a post and pretends to be sad to make sure it won't follow him and then rubs it in its face with sadistic glee and even states that he does this whenever he abandons a pokemon.
  • Team Mom: Snivy shows this side of her again in this episode. Snapping Tepig out of his confused loyalty to Shamus and knocks him out of the way from Emboar's Heat Crash.
