Recap / Pokémon HAC 40 We Didn't Start the Fire

Go To

Joined by Trixie, the group continues their trek to Hoof City. Just as they're about to stop for the night, the group has to first save a forest from being burned down.

  • Big Creepy-Crawlies: The Durant are giant ant Pokémon that serve as the chapter's main threat.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Ultimately, the heroes can't get rid of the Durant and preventing them from starting a forest fire when they attack the Pyroom. However, Drizzle agrees to relocate the Pyroom somewhere without aggressive Pokémon, ensuring that they and the forest are safe.
  • Filler: The author's notes directly call this a filler chapter, but notes that it was fun to write regardless.
  • Mushroom Man: The Pyroom is a Pokémon that looks like a mushroom with feet at its stem.
  • No-Sell: The thick armor of the Durant makes them nigh innumerable to most attacks and, at most, they can just be pushed back. After a series of attacks, they are finally forced to retreat when Peewee uses Dragon Breath against them.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The title of the chapter is the same name of the song by Billy Joel.
  • The Quiet One: Trixie's Slowpoke doesn't say anything through the whole chapter. It also rarely reacts to anything or anyone around it unless given an order by Trixie.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: When the Durant realize that they are outmatched by Flash's group, they flee the battle.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The Pokémon trying to see Magitual's face under its mask is like a similar scene from an infamous filler episode of Naruto, with Team 7 trying to see Kakashi's real face.
    • The Pyroom's appearance shares a lot of similarities with the Toads in Super Mario Bros..
  • Unaffected by Spice: After Slowpoke trades meals with Flash, after noticing Flash can't handle the spice of his food, Slowpoke is shown to be fine eating it itself, either not noticing or just not caring about the spice.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: As they are being attacked by the Durant, the Pyroom are forced to unleash fireballs to defend themselves, unintentionally starting a forest fire that serves as the main point of the chapter's conflict.
