Recap / Miami Vice S 1 E 21 Nobody Lives Forever

Go To

Three punks: Ace, Snake, and an unnamed third one drive through town in a 1968 Plymouth GTX convertable painted with "Death, The Ultimat High" on the side. They rob a hot dog stand, actually a front for a gambling ring, and kill the bookie. The hot dog stand was owned by a crime lord owned by Morgan.

Meanwhile, Crockett is dating a beautiful young architect named Brenda. It is a lot more serious than he expected despite having been only together for a few weeks. Gina confronts Crockett about the fact that he's begun exclusively dating Brenda without bothering to tell her that they were breaking up. This effectively ends the Gina/Crockett relationship as she says she deserves better.

Crockett's relationship with Brenda is also rockier than expected. Brenda is afraid of the danger that Crockett faces as a police officer while he's uncomfortable with her extreme wealth. Tubbs has a conversation with Brenda and says that he doesn't believe their relationship will succeed. After oversleeping at her home, Crockett misses a stakeout and Tubbs arrived at Brenda's front door after having received a horrific beating from Morgan's security.

Crockett must choose between his job and love.

  • Am I Just a Toy to You?: She accuses Crockett of this when he prefers Brenda, and while Sonny protests, it's the official end of their relationship.
  • Ax-Crazy: The three punks are a bunch of violent crazy criminals that end up getting killed rather than face capture.
  • Career Versus Man: A rare male example has Crockett's career with Vice being threatened by how much time he's spending with Brenda versus his job. At the end, he's realized that she wants a great deal more of his time and energy than he's capable of giving as a Vice cop.
  • Car Fu: The unnamed punk attempts to run down Tubbs with his stolen Cadillac.
  • Cartwright Curse: Crockett's relationship with Brenda is incredibly intense this episode but, despite the fact that he only says to take it slow, she's never seen again after this episode.
  • Condescending Compassion: Brenda calls Tubbs out on this by suggesting that she and Crockett are incompatible. He's actually just right.
  • Death Seeker: The three punks are unafraid to die and seek out violent situations.
  • Did Not Think This Through: Morgan has a police officer beat up and it results in Vice shutting down his bookmaking business.
  • Flat Character: The three punks are a bunch of one-dimensionally evil monsters committing crimes for what seems to be fun.
  • For the Evulz: The three punks are more interested in the joys of mayhem than any actual profit from their crimes.
  • Kick the Dog: Crockett's treatment of Gina by not informing her that he was interested in a monogamous relationship with Brenda.
  • The Quincy Punk: The three punks are violent, nihilistic criminals.
  • Ship Sinking: The Gina and Crockett relationship is officially ended in this episode.
  • Uptown Girl: Brenda is a successful architect but a great deal richer than Working-Class Hero, Crockett.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • Gina calls Crockett out for the fact that he started a serious relationship with another woman without telling her that he was.
    • Tubbs is less than pleased that Crockett missed having his back because he overslept at his girlfriend's house.
