Recap / M*A*S*H S8 E3: Guerilla My Dreams

Go To

A South Korean lieutenant arrives with a Korean woman he claims is a North Korean spy and guerilla fighter. An injured Scully informs the doctors that the lieutenant gets a little too hands-on with his interrogations, so they scheme to get her out of camp...but should they?

Attention, all personnel! Captain Pierce does not approve of the following tropes being used during an interrogation:

  • Everyone Has Standards: Despite Park's prisoner being an enemy who freely admits murderous intent towards them, the officers do everything they can to spare her from torture. It's not so much that they care for the prisoner but that they believe no one should be subjected to torture.
  • Honor Before Reason: The personnel of the 4077th don't care if she's innocent or guilty, or even that she tried to kill a wounded soldier. She is their patient, whom they will take care of like any other patient, and should not be subjected to torture to get a confession.
  • Internal Reveal: Lieutenant Park accuses the injured woman of being a guerilla, an accusation Hawkeye brushes off. A scene in post-op in which she tries to kill a wounded patient without any personnel watching shows that Park is right.
  • Jack Bauer Interrogation Technique: Lieutenant Park is apparently a specialist in this.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Lieutenant Park is a rough customer who is quite insistent on being allowed to make use of the Jack Bauer Interrogation Technique on the prisoner, but considering she attempts to kill a patient by removing his IV tube and is later yelling at the doctors that she'd gladly try and kill any of them as well, you can hardly blame him.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: By putting her in an ambulance in their attempt to evacuate her, the doctors demonstrate to Lt. Park that she is safe to be moved and therefore he can legally take custody of her.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: Despite the attitude and actions of the guerrilla towards everyone in camp, Hawkeye's principles against deliberately harming another human being and especially the use of torture are why he refuses to hand her over to the Korean MPs.
  • Precision F-Strike: Hawkeye calls Lt. Park a "son of a bitch." The first uncensored use of the word in prime time television in the US, and one the producers had to get a special dispensation from the FCC to use.
  • Poor Judge of Character: Even after the guerrilla attempts to murder another patient and spits curses at the doctors, Hawkeye and B.J. still attempt to prevent Park from taking her away.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Not only do Hawkeye and B.J. fail spectacularly in their attempt to save the patient from Park, but she is completely unmoved by their efforts on her behalf and still hates them as much as she ever did.
  • Shout-Out: B.J. refers to Park as "Lieutenant Truth or Consequences", after the radio/television game show of the day.
  • Unreliable Narrator: Park claims the guerrilla is threatening to kill Hawkeye and BJ but we only have his word for that, although her body language and tone of voice support Park's translation.
