Tropes associated with this episode:

  • Awful Wedded Life: Dillon and Clementina Hyde are completely miserable in their marriage. He neglects her and tries to flirt with Caroline, she drowns her sorrow with alcohol.
    • Amy Sawyer is implied to not be happy in her marriage either, if her attempting to hit on Charles is of any indication.
  • Big Fun: Arnie Cupps is a jolly, portly colleague of Charles and Caroline's and one of the few they get along with.
  • Formerly Fit: Caroline is surprised to see how fat Clementina got, remembering her to be slim and beautiful (if not particularly bright).
  • Hates Being Nicknamed: Charles hates it when Dillon calls him "Charlie-boy", though it's probably because this is his old rival Dillon nicknaming him.
  • Held Back in School: Implied when Mrs. Oleson comments on how she's yet to attend her 25th year class reunion, despite being older than Caroline, with the implication that she was held back several grades out of either lazyness or brainlessness and finished school well into her 20's.
  • Mock Millionaire: Played with. Arnie Cupps is confirmed to be richer than the Ingalls, but nowhere near as rich as his well-off ex-colleagues and pretends to be on the same level as them out of embarassment.
  • Prematurely Gray Haired: Dillon Hyde is completely gray-haired despite being in his mid-40, assuming he's about the same age as Charles and Caroline.
  • Rich Jerk: Dillon Hyde, who at one point scolds the middle-class Arnie for not being able to return the money Dillon lent him after he found the restaurant he was attending was too expensive for his middle-class wallet. It's also implied that several of Charles and Caroline's former classmates Took a Level in Jerkass due to being miserable despite the wealth they achieved.
  • Seduction-Proof Marriage: Charles and Caroline are hit on by colleagues Amy Sawyer and Dillon Hyde, respectively, and neither of them are amused.
  • Token Good Teammate: Not that all of Charles and Caroline's old colleagues are bad people, but most of them turned out become miserable rich snobs. Arnie Crubbs is the only one who stays as pleasant and friendly as ever.
  • Wife-Basher Basher: When Dillon Hyde slaps his wife after she gives him a Reason You Suck Speech and dares him to make her shut up, Charles punches him in the gut before leaving with Caroline.
