Recap / Learning How To Be A Princess Chapter 24 First Meetings

Go To

On the way to school, Boscha finally meets Luz face-to-face for the first time. It doesn't go well.

Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:

  • Berserk Button: Both Luz and Boscha display one in regards to insulting their parentage. Specifically, trying to imply that there's anything wrong with their parents for having married outside of their race, with them coming to blows within seconds of meeting each other when Boscha tries to insult her this way and Luz retaliates.
  • Blatant Lies: Luz and Boscha pretend to be friends so that Hawk doesn't kill the latter. Downplayed in that Hawk knows Luz is lying through her teeth, but can't feasibly call her out without revealing that she's Luz's future self, so she goes along with it.
  • Leave Me Alone!: Subverted. Boscha wants to reject Luz's help, but mentally acknowledges that she'd be a fool not to accept considering the alternative would be dying, so she plays along with the idea that she and Luz were just having a friendly spar.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: For as needlessly cruel as Boscha is, she does have a point that Luz's inability to keep her royal status a secret has resulting in the Royal Guard nearly killing various other characters in order to make up for her mistakes.
  • Mundane Object Amazement: Subverted. At first, it appears that Boscha is drawn to Eda's stall because of this, only to reveal that unlike most witches, she's fully aware of the actual uses of all the human items the woman sells. She correctly identifies what Eda calls a set of drinking glasses as high-quality chemistry set before Luz can correct Eda herself.
  • Parental Neglect: Boscha's mother was guilty of this following the death of her husband, throwing herself into her work. She also blames herself for the lab accident that caused his death, which caused her to deliberately avoid even looking at her daughter due to that guilt. For her part, she is trying to mend their relationship in the present day, but Boscha has no desire to reciprocate.
  • Power Incontinence: In contrast to Luz, whose hybrid nature gives her increased magical power, Boscha is the exact opposite, as her demon-side is shown to limit her ability to cast traditional magic, making it fizzle out on occasion. Naturally, she's excited when she stumbles upon glyph magic.
  • Rollerblade Good: Boscha. The author's notes state she learned this in response to Amity having learned to skateboard years prior, and continues to roller blade since she loves having a skill that isn't reliant on her shaky magical abilities.
  • Unknown Rival: Boscha ends the chapter declaring that she'll learn glyph magic in order to one day show-up Luz.
