Recap / Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts S3E05 "Song ReMix"

Go To

A “cured” chum returns. Later, a dream family reunion becomes a reality. The race for a vaccine begins after a feverish frolic with the Dubstep Bees.

Tropes:

  • All for Nothing: Margot betrayed Wolf (again) because she was trying to protect her brother (and herself) from being cured by Emilia. After she did what Emilia wanted, the two of them were cured anyway.
  • Bee Afraid: The Dubstep Bees’ sting can cause “dance fever”, which forces the victim to dance until they die from exhaustion. It can be stopped with a second sting.
  • Big Damn Reunion: Kipo finally meets Song, and she and Lio finally reunite.
  • Breather Episode: This episode is fairly low-stakes compared to the episodes preceding and following it. Though there is the looming threat of Emilia attacking soon, the bulk of the episode is mostly just mother-daughter bonding, convincing a hive of Dubstep Bees to help, and searching for a lost cat (the cured Yumyan).
  • Brought Down to Normal: Thanks to the stolen Cure-Dart, Song loses her status as a Half-Human Hybrid and turns back to her human form.
  • Can't Catch Up: It's been thirteen years since Song was a rationale being let alone able to do any complex formulas. She might be a brilliant scientist but anybody out of practice will be rusty regardless of whether or not they're gifted.
  • Censored Child Death: A Death of Personality variant. We don’t actually see Margot and Rupert getting hit with the Cure-Dart by Emilia as the scene cuts back to Kipo’s group. The two wolf pups aren’t seen again until the end of the episode, reverted into regular animals, effectively killing them off.
  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends with Emilia and an army of cure dart-wielding humans making their way to Timbercat Village.
  • Hidden Depths: Thanks to her time as a Mega Monkey, Song can understand and communicate with Dubstep Bees.
  • Involuntary Dance: The Queen of the Dubstep Bees stings Kipo, forcing her to dance until she dies from exhaustion. Lio, Song, and Wolf dance in order to impress the bees into sparing her, which works... until it doesn't. However, an impassioned plea from Song convinces the Queen to spare Kipo.
  • The Long List: When Kipo questions to the Mutes what would scare off the humans, they answer clowns, other humans, diversity, public speaking, great big cockroach, their past, a Mega Monkey (which they don’t have anymore), and death ivy. Kipo picks the last one.
  • My Hovercraft Is Full of Eels: Kipo accidentally insults the Dubstep Bee Queen when she tries to speak their language, getting her stung.
  • No-Sell: Dubstep Bees are the only creatures to be immune to death ivy. No one knows why.
  • Not So Above It All: Even Wolf joins to Kipo’s encouragement cry for Song.
  • Rewarded as a Traitor Deserves: Margot and her brother end up cured by Dr. Emilia anyway.
  • She's Back: Song finally returns in her human form, thanks to a Cure-Dart by Lio.
  • Skewed Priorities: Upon seeing the cured Yumyan Hammerpaw, Label worries about losing her muscular body if she were cured. Jamack calls her out for not worrying about becoming non-sapient.
  • Smart Animal, Inconvenient Instincts: Dave’s attempts to lure Yumyan out of hiding by making can opener noises and drawing boxes on the ground just attract the non-cured Timbercats.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: If Benson’s suggestion is any indication, he’s afraid of clowns.
