Recap / J-WITCH S1 E34, "A Challenge of Leadership"

Go To

After being captured and inadvertently brainwashed by Elyon, Aldarn challenges Caleb for control of the rebellion. Meanwhile, new schemes are formed by factions within Phobos' forces.

  • Armor-Piercing Question: When Elyon briefly has Aldarn in custody, and he accuses Phobos of murdering his parents, Elyon asks if there's actually any proof that Phobos is responsible for it, something Aldarn reluctantly admits there isn't.
  • The Chessmaster: Tarakudo shows himself to be this (which is even pointed out in the author's notes for the chapter), as he convinces Wong and Cedric to team up in a plot against Phobos, only to rat them out to gain Phobos' trust as part of his own scheme.
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: Even though they agree to work together to betray Phobos, Wong and Cedric both secretly plan to betray each other afterwards.
  • Evil Mentor: Tarakudo works to become this to Phobos.
  • Flaming Sword: In the beginning of the chapter, Caleb dips his katana in lamp-oil, and when he clashes it against an enemy blade, a resulting spark ignites it. This allows him to keep the guards at bay for a short while before the flames die down.
  • For Want Of A Nail: Since Tohru and Yan Lin stay behind with Blunk, the bake sale goods include numerous Japanese and Chinese sweets.
  • In Spite of a Nail: The attempt to make a peace treaty with the rebels was genuine here. Unfortunately, Tarakudo prompts Wong and Cedric to plot behind Phobos' back, so it still fails.
  • Jedi Mind Trick: Name-dropped when Elyon does it to Aldarn and company, apparently entirely unconsciously.
  • Mundane Utility: The girls use their powers to make cookies.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Phobos is willing to make peace with the Rebellion, on the grounds of wanting to actually have a world to rule over, not one that's been devastated by never-ending war.
  • The Starscream: Cedric and Wong, who have individually already been established as this, are convinced by Tarakudo to team up to steal Elyon's powers and usurp Phobos. They're both shown to be planning to backstab the other when the time is right.
  • Villain Team-Up: Wong and Cedric join forces as The Starscream thanks to Tarakudo, who then reveals the truth to Phobos so they can counter-plot together for the goal of a shared victory.
  • We Can Rule Together: The reason that Tarakudo is playing Evil Mentor for Phobos is to try and arrange this scenario between the two of them.
