Go To

"right-hand man" contains examples of:

  • all lowercase letters: Like every other chapter title of this fic, this chapter's title is in all lowercase letters.
  • Artistic License – History: Acknowledged in the author’s notes that the fic incarnation of John Mott is married at the time of the Delaware crossing, but his real-life self wasn’t.
  • Bilingual Backfire: Lafayette and Alexander are talking about Aaron in French, not knowing he speaks French until he responds to them in French himself. Downplayed since they're his friends and weren't trash-talking him, and Invoked since he didn’t tell either of them he spoke French “so that he could catch [them] doing precisely this.“
  • Content Warnings: There’s one before the start of the chapter for alcohol mention and use in the second and third sections of the chapter.
  • Drunken Song: Aaron usually doesn’t drink. He gets drunk in this chapter, and his singing a drinking song with his new friends is used to emphasize that.
  • Entendre Failure: Aaron offers to tutor Lafayette in English. Lafayette replies saying “I would very gladly accept your offer of…private lessons,” meaning he’s interested in sex with Aaron. Aaron doesn’t realize that and starts talking about lesson plans and dictionaries.
  • Idiosyncratic Episode Naming: Following the convention of naming every chapter title after a Hamilton lyric, this chapter takes its title from the lyrics “I'm gonna need a right-hand man” and/or "Here comes the general and his right hand man." Those lyrics also Title Drop the song from which they come from, "Right Hand Man."
  • Mad Oracle: Discussed.
Aaron: Does that make me mad? Mourning a woman who hasn’t even been born?
Laurens: I wouldn’t know. Maybe it’s in the job description, being a bit mad?
  • Titled After the Song: "Right Hand Man" from the musical Hamilton.
