Recap / Hamster & Gretel S1E04 "Math Punch"

Go To

As Gretel struggles with her math homework, a new villain shows up in town: Rodney Thunderpants, a digital tehnology-hating cowboy who received electrokinetic powers after a freak accident involving a cellphone tower, and intends to use his electric powers to fry as many cellphones as he can, and wreaking havoc in general. While Gretel and Hamster try to put a stop to Rodney's plans, Dave tries to give Carolina an anniversary gift so perfect that it leaves her crying instead of him.

Tropes:

  • 2D Visuals, 3D Effects: The train that Rodney and Kevin were on.
  • Actually a Good Idea: Gretel points out that Rodney, with his lightning superpowers, could've named himself Lightning-Rod. Rodney realizes that she's right and hates that he couldn't have come up with it before he printed out his business cards.
  • Diegetic Visual Effects: As Gretel calculates how fast to go to catch the train, figures and equations appear around her. When she speeds away, all the figures fall on top of a guy sitting in a bench.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: After learning that the police were able to track him down with their phones, Rodney decided that he should give phones a chance and get himself one.
  • Evil Luddite: Rodney really dislikes smartphones and how they have been integrated into the daily life, including his own. He seems to be coming around at the end though when a police officer tells him phones have GPS capabilities and that he was even able to use an app to find Delilah for him.
  • Everybody Hates Mathematics: Both Gretel and Rodney hate math, and state they'd rather mine coal instead (and Gretel hates mining for coal too).
  • Lightning Can Do Anything: Apparently, being struck by lightning four times while under a fallen cell tower gave Rodney electrokinesis.
  • Morality Pet: Before he was given his superpowers, Rodney rode around the desert with his best friend and trusty steed Delilah. When the storm that gave him his superpowers hit and the tower fell, it spooked her and caused her to run off into the desert alone, which was likely another facet for Rodney despising technology so much. Thankfully, the police officer that arrests him reveals that his horse finding app on his phone was able to find her again, which helps Rodney come around to the idea of phones at the end.
  • Rail Enthusiast: Rodney boards an old steam train for his escape, calling it the only form of transportation he finds acceptable.
  • Rule of Three: Parodied. Rodney was struck by lightning once, then three more times. That's a grand total of four, but he never states it that way.
  • Save the Villain: Kevin and Rodney Thunderpants were about to meet their fates when they are falling into the abyss, but luckily, Hamster and Gretel came in just in time to stop Kevin and Rodney from falling.
  • Train Problem: Gretel's homework includes one. She argues that now that she has superpowers, she has no need to board a train. Later, with Kevin and Rodney on a runaway train headed for a cliff, Gretel has to figure out how fast she has to go to save them.
