"Off the Hook" is the twenty third episode of the first (internet) season of Happy Tree Friends.
Russell is seen diving to feast on a clam. Before he can even enjoy it, an anchor is suddenly dropped onto him. It turns out that Lumpy is fishing in the area. After recovering from dizziness, Russell sees a fishing hook right in front of his face. The hook then catches his eyelid and pulls him to the right. Lumpy thinks he has a catch, so he begins to reel in. Russell gets dragged through the water. On the way, he gets zapped by an electric eel, shredded by corals, and then smacked onto a sea mine, which does not explode. Russell thinks he is safe until Lumpy pulls back some more, setting the mine off. When Lumpy finally reels in his catch, he is surprised to discover that he only managed to catch an eyelid with an eyeball on it. Said eyeball ends up falling off.
"Off the Hook" contains the following:
- Accidental Murder: Lumpy has no idea that he led Russell to his death.
- The Cameo: The Cursed Idol can be seen being launched away during the sea mine explosion.
- Circling Birdies: Russell gets a marine version with starfish and fish as he is recovering from Lumpy dropping an anchor on him.
- Cruel and Unusual Death: Russell is blown up into pieces by a sea mine.
- Early-Installment Weirdness: As seen during Russell's X-Ray Sparks, it is shown that he still has functional feet hidden by the peg legs.
- Eye Scream: Lumpy's fishing hook gets stuck on Russell's eyelid, marking the start of the latter's Trauma Conga Line.
- Hope Spot: Russell thinks he is finally safe after getting smacked into a seemingly inactive sea mine. One pull later, and Russell is history.
- Psycho Electric Eel: One of the marine hazards Russell gets dragged into.
- Sea Mine: Russell ends up getting smacked into one. Lumpy then inadvertently sets it off.
- They Killed Kenny Again: Russell dies.
- Throw the Dog a Bone: Lumpy survives.
- Trauma Conga Line: As Russell gets dragged by Lumpy's fishing line, he gets electrocuted by an electric eel, shredded by corals, smacked into a sea mine, and then blown up into pieces by said mine.
- Updated Re-release: One of the early episodes to be part of "Classics Remastered" releases, which rerelease early HTF episodes in HD.
- X-Ray Sparks: Seen when Russell is being electrocuted by the electric eel.
