Mario and Luigi's quest to save the Princess takes them to the world of Minecraft. As in, a Warp Pipe made in the style of Minecraft mysteriously appears next to Mario's house.
It all began when Mario heard Luigi calling his name, presumably in a cry for help. Mario goes down the pipe to help his little brother, ending up in a strange new world. When attacked and nearly eaten by a zombie, Luigi shows up, quickly destroys the zombie, and tells Mario that he found a letter from Peach pleading for help—Bowser took her to a castle he built in this world.
After some training with the tools they need to survive, the brothers head toward the castle to save the princess. There, they find that Bowser has a horde of zombies at his disposal, and promptly sics them on Mario and Luigi. Using their quick thinking, survival skills, and knowledge of the tools that they had, they manage to defeat the zombies and free the Princess from Bowser's clutches. In addition, they find TNT in the castle and use it to blow the place up while escaping unharmed.
Tropes applying to Super Mario in the Minecraft World:
- Big Brother Instinct: What kicks off the plot. Mario hears Luigi's calling of his name and goes down the Minecraft pipe to save him. Turns out Luigi's fine, and has been learning the ropes in that universe.
- Know When to Fold 'Em: During a battle with Mario, Bowser flees when he gets hit too many times and knows that the fight will be a losing one.
- Nonfatal Explosions: The destruction of Bowser's castle leaves Bowser himself unharmed. He presumably hid in a safe area.
- Riddle for the Ages: What's a Warp Pipe that takes you to the world of Minecraft doing next to the Mario Bros. residence?
- Save the Princess: This is basically the premise of a typical Super Mario Bros. game in the style of Minecraft.
- Suddenly Speaking: Luigi speaks full lines of dialogue for the first time, albeit through text boxes.
