Recap / Friends S 3 E 7 The One With The Race Car Bed

Go To

Monica buys a new bed, but has to keep it a secret because she bought it from Janice's ex-husband. Joey gets a job teaching aspiring young actors. Rachel tries to get her father to bond with Ross.

Tropes

  • Bait-and-Switch: Janice's ex-husband starts his mattress commercial seemingly depressed and talking about his divorce, only for him to burst out with energy when he starts talking about the crazy discounts.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Rachel desperately wants her father and Ross to get along. They ultimately do bond over having the same criticisms of her (e.g. not having renters' insurance).
  • Can't Get Away with Nuthin': Monica orders a new bed but doesn't want her friends knowing because it was ordered from Janice's ex-husband. She ends up getting sent the wrong one, a race car that looks nothing like her old one.
  • Inner Monologue: The cold open features the friends (minus Ross, who's ranting about an incident at work) and Gunther monologuing inside their heads. Joey plays a tune which Phoebe somehow hears.
  • Jerkass: Dr. Green is really cruel to Ross and self-righteous on top.
  • Kitschy Local Commercial: Janice's ex-husband performs in the commercials for his mattress business. He's not above using their divorce as material for the latest commercial.
  • Manchild: The Stinger has Chandler joyfully playing with the race car bed.
  • Nice to the Waiter: What gets Ross and Dr. Green feuding. Ross feels that Dr. Green left a rather poor tip for a server and attempted to leave a better one, only for Dr. Green to find out and claim Ross is trying to make him look bad. Rachel begrudgingly sees Ross's side of it, saying bad tippers at Central Perk get their drinks sneezed on.
  • Pet the Dog: Dr. Green does show genuine concern for Ross' neck injury, even before the two start bonding.
  • Revenge Is a Dish Best Served: Rachel admits that if someone at Central Perk tipped as badly as her father does she'd sneeze in their drink. When Ross asks if she really does that she (badly) lies that she doesn't but the other waitresses do.
  • Springtime for Hitler: Joey learns that one of his best students is up for the same role as him, so he tries to sabotage him by recommending that he play the character as gay. The student ends up getting the part.
  • Skewed Priorities: For some reason, Monica thinks pretending she still wets the bed is less embarrassing than admitting the wrong bed was delivered to her (to be fair, she's also trying to deny that she even bought a new bed in the first place).
  • Wham Shot: At the end of the episode, Joey accidentally sees Janice, who's dating Chandler, kissing her ex-husband.
