Recap / Dinosaurs S 02 E 05 Endangered Species

Go To

With Earl and Fran's 20th anniversary coming up, Earl buys a pair of Grapdelites, a very delicious mammal species, to celebrate, told that these are the last two that the market has. Earl asks Robbie to hide the Grapdelites in his room until the anniversary. As Robbie interacts with the Grapdelites, he learns that they are the last two of their kind (having no prior concept of limited resources). At work, Mr. Richfield overhears Earl talking about his anniversary gift for Fran, and, as they are his favorite treat, pays Earl to let him have them. Concerned about the species being endangered (and with them being unsure of mating to allow for more), Robbie tells Earl that they had escaped, but eventually comes clean and tells Earl that they are the last of their kind. Guilt-ridden, Earl brings them to Mr. Richfield before deciding that he can't sell them to him. Richfield tells Earl that he understands and wants to help, telling him that he's not the right one to take care of them - corporations are, and asks to take care of them. Earl lets him, but as soon as Earl leaves the trailer, Richfield eats the Grapdelites. But at home, Robbie finds two baby Grapdelites, and Earl shows them to the family for Fran's anniversary.

Includes examples of

  • Adam and Eve Plot: The Grapdelites.
  • Birth-Death Juxtaposition: While the Grapdelite couple are devoured by Richfield, the end of the episode reveals they managed to have babies.
  • Bittersweet Ending: The Grapdelites end up getting eaten by Richfield, but Robbie finds they left two offspring.
  • Green Aesop: About endangered species.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: Near the end, Mr. Richfield seemed moved by Earl's explanation of the Grapdelites status as the last of their kind and told Earl that the Wesayso will take care of the two creatures. Then we see Mr. Richfield laughing smugly and we, and Earl, hear a horrifying crunch, implying that he ate them.
  • Karma Houdini: Mr. Richfield gets no comeuppance for eating the Grapdelites.
  • Parental Abandonment: The Grapedelite couple get eaten before their eggs hatch.
  • Pet the Dog: After Earl gives Mr. Richfield his money back and Richfield decides to "take care" of the Grapdelites, Richfield still lets Earl have the money. He may have gotten away with eating them, but considering how greedy he is, it's amazing that he decided to let Earl have the money when he wouldn't have needed to.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: The Grapdelites. Their babies more so.
  • Whale Egg: The Grapdelites are revealed to lay eggs (which is Truth in Television for most Mesozoic mammals).
