Recap / Diagnosis: Murder S3E12 "35 Millimeter Murder"

Go To

Mark has picked up his recent vacation photographs from the developer - or so he thought. Turns out there was a mixup. When he goes to the person who the photographs belong to, paparazzo Vic Slovak, it turns out one of them has a critical clue to a crime - and the criminals are trying to prevent this evidence from going out at any price.

"35 Millimeter Murder" displays symptoms of the following tropes:

  • All There in the Manual: Only online credits reveal that the judge's name is "Walter Greystone".
  • Attack on the Heart: Don Blaine gets it twice in the heart from a .22 caliber.
  • Born in an Elevator: Amanda's baby is born in Jesse's car.
  • Convenient Photograph: Vic Slovak's photograph happened to capture a kidnapping.
  • Dirty Cop: Subverted. Don Blaine supposedly resigned from the police Vice squad because he was "getting too chummy with some of the guys he used to be after", but it turns out that he was The Mole to the criminals.
  • Enhance Button: Vic and Mark use this on Vic's photograph to get identification information on the woman. They later, ridiculously enough, use it to find the culprit's face reflected in a bodyguard's sunglasses. It's a miracle to pull that kind of image on modern computers, let alone one in the 90's.
  • Faking the Dead: Don Blaine faked murdering Darlene to allow her to escape. Unfortunately, Eddie Alcala had the driver check on the body, and not only was Darlene still in danger, Alcala shot Don dead.
  • Male Gaze: The scene in which Steve talks with Darlene's employer Mindy opens with a long panning shot of Mindy's bikini clad form as she lay in a tanning bed.
  • The Mole: Don Blaine served this role. He succeeded in getting released from the crooks; unfortunately, he was murdered afterwards.
  • Screaming Birth: Downplayed, as Amanda doesn't really scream so much as she grunts when giving birth to CJ. At least it's not quadruplets this time.
