Recap / Dead End Paranormal Park S 1 E 9 The Phantom Of The Theme Park

Go To

Tropes:

  • Break-Up Song: "My Frankenstein" is a platonic/parasocial version of this for Norma with Pauline, as Norma says in the song itself:
    It's kind of messed up
    I feel like a breakup
Except it's all your fault, not mine!
  • Darkest Hour: Though Temeluchus dispatches Pauline from Norma's body, his sister Zagan arrives on Earth with an army and releases Courtney from her cuffs, causing her to abandon Barney and Norma and finally go to hell as she wanted as Zagan turns the park to stone and the demon royalty siblings retreat to Dead End to prepare to conquer Earth. Barney and Norma lampshade this in the episode's final musical number.
  • Deal with the Devil: Temeluchus convinces Pugsley to allow him to fully possess the dog's body to free Norma and defeat Pauline on the promise of giving back control to the pug. While he holds up the former end of the bargain, it's yet to be seen on the latter portion of the deal.
  • Dr. Frankenstein: Norma compares Pauline to the literary doctor since her films "gave me life" like Frankenstein's Monster. However, in the end, she makes sure to say Pauline is the monster.
  • Empathic Environment: Norma (under the effects of the musical spell) manages to shatter a mirror, short out the electricity, and bring down a stage light during her performance, which reflects what she's singing about.
  • Foreshadowing: Courtney reaches towards the sky when singing about how much she wants to go to hell; she later teleports onto the chandelier when saying she doesn't belong on Earth. Towards the end of the episode, Zagan tells her that the cuffs that prevent her from using the elevator weren't placed by demons, but by angels.
  • Glamour: Pugsley casts an illusion spell on Norma that makes her look exactly like Pauline so that the latter will possess her and the others can trap Pauline's spirit by taking a photo.
  • I Lied: When Courtney confronts Pauline after Barney and Pugsley convince her that Pauline probably can't actually hold up her end of the deal, Pauline shamelessly admits she just needed someone to cast the spell and never was going to hold up her end of the deal.
  • Imagine Spot: "Just Some Guy" and "Driver's Seat" takes place in Barney's and Pugsley's minds capes, respectively (though because of the spell, Pugsley can see Barney's daydreams of Logs).
  • "I Want" Song: Courtney's song is about wanting to go down into hell. It's also a bit of a parody of similar songs, particularly "Somewhere That's Green" from Little Shop of Horrors or "Part of Your World" from The Little Mermaid (1989) since she's wishing to go somewhere worse instead of somewhere better.
  • Musical Episode: Everyone starts singing and dancing after Pugsley casts a spell that turns everything into a musical, intended to distract the other employees so that he, Barney, and Norma can sneak back into Phoenix Parks.
  • Taken for Granite: Zagan can turn people into stone, which she does to most of the audience.
  • Wham Line: Zagan telling Courtney that their cuffs were actually placed by angels, and not demons.
