Recap / Darkwing Duck S 1 E 26 Alls Fahrenheit In Love And War

Go To

A frigid winter blast has Darkwing longing for a vacation on a nice sunny beach, but a mysterious series of bank robberies with absolutely no clues left behind interfere with his plans. His investigation leads him under the city, where an unusually cold woman finds her heart warmed by Darkwing's good looks. Under her amorous approach though is a sinister plan to turn St. Canard into one hot city!

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Isis "Icy" Vanderchill is very flirtatious with Darkwing. Darkwing goes on a date with her, but it's only to find out what she's doing; he's disgusted at her attraction to him.
  • Angry Collar Grab: A variant; Darkwing takes out his frustration with the cold and snow on his unfortunate sidekick by yanking Launchpad's scarf multiple times while screaming about how much he hates the weather.
  • Bait-and-Switch Comment: During Darkwing's opening monologue, he goes on at length about the miserable weather and then asks, seemingly rhetorically, if it prevents him from doing his job. Then he says it does.
  • Brick Joke: At the beginning of the episode, Darkwing says they should go off on a vacation to escape the snow. This gets derailed by Vanderchill's crime spree. At the end of the episode, Launchpad brings it up again and Darkwing says he's now contracted a cold and is going to bed.
  • Bridal Carry: Briefly invoked by Darkwing, who jumps into Launchpad's arms to get his feet off the hot floor.
  • Convection, Schmonvection: When Isis' lightning bugs melt down a gold stash Darkwing and Launchpad are watching, they're pretty okay as long as they are not directly touching the metal surface of the holding room. Even when they do touch metal, the worst they get is a hotfoot.
  • Double Take: Happens when Launchpad ends up in Isis's ice factory and accidentally finds the stolen gold.
Launchpad: Like I always say, where there's a freezer, there's bound to be a microwavable snack. [opens one of the freezers] Rats! Nothing but a fridge full of gold. [closes the freezer, then quickly opens it again] Gold?! I can't wait to tell DW.
  • Extreme Omnivore: In Icy's desperation to get warm, she eats hot charcoal briquettes.
  • In-Universe Nickname: "Icy" is a nickname Isis Vanderchill has in the story.
  • Just Between You and Me: Lampshaded and subverted. Darkwing tries to goad Icy Vanderchill into telling him her scheme, to which she responds:
Icy: Reveal my plan? What do you think this is, a cheap cartoon?
  • Mood-Swinger: In the opening, Darkwing shifts in the blink of an eye from screaming about his hatred of snow to calmly commenting how much fake fur flatters him.
  • Not Now, Kiddo: Darkwing initially ignores Launchpad as he tries to point out the fire bugs. It takes the beach ball he brought along for atmosphere popping before he realizes something is strange.
  • Outdoor Bath Peeping: A G-rated version. Darkwing and Launchpad first meet Isis "Icy" Vanderchill when they stumble upon her taking a bath in hot lava - although she's wearing a full-body bathing suit while she's doing so. She acts quite flattered when Darkwing comes around the corner.
  • Pathetic Drooping Weapon: When Isis Vanderchill coats St. Canard in gold to heat things up, Darkwing's gas gun goes limp from the sheer heat.
  • Pulled from Your Day Off: Darkwing announces his plans to go on vacation somewhere warmer. However, then he overhears a bank manager talking to a couple of cops about stolen gold and he decides he'll go on vacation after figuring out what's happening. The aftermath leaves Darkwing sick and not wanting to go anywhere.
  • Punny Title: The title is a pun on "all's fair in love and war."
  • Rapid-Fire "But!": Launchpad protests with a rapid series of "but!" exclamations when Darkwing ignores him while he's trying to call attention to the villain's lackeys. Darkwing just tells him to cut out the motorboat impression.
  • Subverted Catchphrase: Darkwing Duck ends his usual Mad Libs Catchphrase on a damp squib as the intense heat from the gold-coated city gets to him:
Darkwing Duck: I am the terror that flaps in the night! I am the No. 90 sunblock that will stop your burn! I am... warm beyond belief.
  • Tempting Fate: Darkwing claims no crook would try to commit a crime in all the snow and cold blanketing St. Canard. As it turns out, Isis Vanderchill, motivated by her hatred of the cold, had already started her crime spree.
