"I wish you'd put a lid on it."

A Plot: Brent buys a new widescreen TV, but won't tell Hank because he doesn't want Hank hanging out at his house all the time. Through a series of misunderstandings, Hank comes to think that Brent is poor and goes about trying to convince Davis.

B Plot: Oscar decides Emma will get no more "free rides" after noticing she never puts the lid on the sugar bowl. This leads to a battle where they each stop doing things for each other.

C Plot: When Wanda starts selling jewelry, Lacey decides to buy some, only to discover she's been ripped off. She spends her time trying to prove to Wanda that what she did was wrong.

Tropes Referenced:

  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: After spending the whole episode engaging in a tit-for-tat war, Oscar apologizes to Emma with jewelry, and the two kiss and make up (though Oscar still refuses to wear pants).
  • Chain of Deals: Towards the end of the C Plot, Brent pays Wanda $20 for some amethyst, Lacey has a swear-filled outburst, Wanda gives Lacey the $20 as a refund, Lacey has to put the $20 in the swear jar, Brent uses the $20 to buy amethyst (despite already paying for it), and then gives the amethyst to Lacey as a gift to calm her down from being upset about amethyst.
  • Escalating War: The spat between Oscar and Emma.
  • I Need to Go Iron My Dog: Brent hopes the gas bell will ring so he can get away from Hank asking to borrow money. Eventually it does actually ring.
  • Naked People Are Funny: One way Oscar tries to get back at Emma is by walking around the house naked, like in his bachelor days. In response, Emma stops telling him when she has guests over.
  • Principles Zealot: Lacey will stop at nothing to prove that Wanda's jewelry was overpriced, including buying more jewelry that she doesn't need from a catalog.
  • Real Men Hate Affection: Hank claims he can't ask Brent if he's poor because guys don't talk about emotional stuff.
  • Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: Brent attempts to keep his new TV a secret from Hank because he doesn't want someone at his house all the time. However, in so doing, he informs Davis, who starts hanging at his house all the time.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: Both Hank and Davis separately get admonished for bragging about men's ability to pee standing up, and both reply with "No brag. Just fact." Brent, however, somehow didn't know it was possible for men to do this and was shocked to find out. One can assume that his extreme laziness prevented him from ever trying it himself.
  • Sustained Misunderstanding: The various things Hank witnesses that make him believe Brent is poor. Once Davis finds out about the TV, he does everything in his power to keep the "Brent is poor" pity train going so that he and Brent get provided with free snacks for TV watching, and donations so that Brent can pay for more channels.
  • The Swear Jar: One is used to try to raise funds for Brent. However, Karen is coerced into paying when people like Oscar refuse to, to her dismay.
  • Title Drop: When Hank sees Brent crying at a pawn shop, unaware that Brent had just been told the pawn shop owner's dog had recently passed.
  • Verbal Backspace:
Lacey: This piece and this piece are identical. Except this one's 60 bucks.
Karen: 60 bucks? What a hose job!
    Lacey: I paid 80.
    Karen: Oh. What a bargain.
