Recap / Code Geass: Paladins of Voltron, Chapter 38, "Jupiter's Sanctuary"

Go To

Retreating to Jupiter, the Paladins and their allies recuperate their losses and plan their next move.

  • Adaptation Expansion: Milly and Rivalz each get a little elaboration on their family issues.
  • Archnemesis Dad: We get some elaboration on Rivalz's relationship with his father, Corbin Yates, and what we learn puts the latter squarely in this trope — Corbin tried to sell off his youngest son just to avoid issues with dividing up his children's inheritance. It's made clear his wife and children want nothing to do with him after they found this out.
  • Breather Episode: While there is still plenty of drama to go around, the chapter mostly focuses on the Voltron Coalition recovering from the beating they got in the previous chapter and how the Paladins' families are handling the truth about their children/grandchildren/siblings.
  • Character Development: Viletta remembers her time as Chigusa, which allowed her to understand the Paladins' motives better and perform a Heel–Face Turn of her own free will.
  • Dropping the Bombshell:
    • Milly, Shirley, Rivalz, and Kallen reveal their identities as Paladins of Voltron to their families in this chapter, who all handle it differently.
    • At the end of the chapter, the Paladins decide to inform their allies of Zarkon's status as the original Black Paladin.
  • Extreme Doormat: One of the pillbug aliens does not seem to mind Rivalz's younger brother pulling on its fur in the slightest.
  • Family of Choice: Allura reveals that she views the Paladins as this, with Nunnally admitting she feels the same way.
  • Given Name Reveal: Rai accidentally looking through C.C.'s memories causes her to unconsciously reveal her true name - Cera.
  • Good Eyes, Evil Eyes: Cornelia notes that staring into Zarkon's pupil-less eyes is like looking into a void, which is one of the few things to leave her terrified.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Dialogue between Ohgi and Tamaki reveals that Lelouch told the two of them (and possibly other members of the Black Knights) that the boy who infiltrated the Castle of Lions is his uncle, V.V.
    • At the end of the chapter the Paladins reveal to their higher-up Earth allies that Zarkon was the first Black Paladin.
  • Parents as People: All of the Paladins' parents (with the obvious exception of Lelouch's) are conflicted about their children being the Paladins of Voltron, but aside from Shirley's parents (who seem to be shellshocked), said parents (and in Milly's case grandparent) are all supportive of their children's choices.
  • Social Climber: Corbin Yates, Rivalz's father, is indicated to be one, since he only wanted one son, and planned to marry off all of his daughters to wealthy husbands, including Nobility if he could find someone willing to wed them.
  • Spotting the Thread: While Cecile doesn't figure out that Zarkon is the former Black Paladin, she does notice that his weapon (the Black Bayard) is similar to the ones used by the majority of the Paladins.
  • Tempting Fate: Reuben apparently told some of his colleagues that one of Milly's ideas would bring about the end of the world. He admits to Milly that he had been joking at the time, but with the Galra invading due to Earth being the Paladins' home planet...
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: It's noted that nobody seems to be interested in observing the Red Spot on Jupiter (where the Castle is currently hiding) because everyone is feeling down from the battle in the previous chapter.
