Recap / Captain N The Game Master S 2 E 7 Once Upon A Time Machine

Go To

While trying to show off by taking out some monsters without his Power Pad, Kevin's belt is stolen by an anthropomorphic pig who uses it to power his time machine. In trying to get it back, Kevin and Link team up with the cat Pero, who the pig is also victimizing.

Based on the game Puss 'n Boots: Pero's Great Adventure

Tropes:

  • And the Adventure Continues: The game ends on Pero fighting Dr. Gari Gari and Count Gruemon at the Statue of Liberty. In the show there are apparently several other hops through time he needs to make to get home, which happen offscreen.
  • Bowdlerize: Pero doesn't have the gun or bombs he has in the game, only the boomerang. Even when he uses that, he misses.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: As in the game, Count Gruemon pursues Pero through time and sends assassins to kill him for letting a captured mouse go.
  • Furry Confusion: Everyone in Pero's world is an animal-person, but what's the deal with the horse who pulls the cart Link, Kevin and Pero use to make an escape from the Wild West town?
    • Contrast the show's version of the Statue of Liberty also, which has a feline face and actually makes more sense than it still being human in the game.
    • When asked about how far the villains are willing to go to kill Pero, he sheepishly admits he loves bacon burgers, too. Which apparently offends the anthropomorphic pig who's the main villain.
  • Giant Space Flea from Nowhere: Averted with the giant robot frog that shows up midway through the episode. Seems random, but it's actually a boss enemy from Pero's Great Adventure (so it's still a Giant Space Flea in the game).
    • This would apply to the Sea Monster the villains summon at the end to attack the heroes, which was not in the game.
  • No-Gear Level: Keven spends the episode without his Power Pad. He has Link with him to help take some of the load off this time, but realizes how dependent he's gotten on it.
  • Time Travel Episode: The episode starts in The Wild West, then to an age of pirates, Victorian London, and eventually a furry version of modern New York.
  • What You Are in the Dark: Pero abandons Kevin to face a giant sea serpent by himself, but can't fight his urge to come back to tell Kevin about the monster's Achilles' Heel.
  • You Don't Look Like You: With his yellow coloration and bushy cheek hair, Pero looks more like Sylvester the cat than any of his art from the game or manual. Let alone his art for Toei Animation itself. Maybe the rights to adapt the game didn't extend to using Pero's actual likeness.
