David takes the campers on a search for a new camp mascot. Max spends some quality time with the Quartermaster. Nikki and Neil encounter a dangerous wild animal.

- Bait-and-Switch: Twice with the quartermaster. First it looks like he's going to kill Max, only to show him an idyllic glade full of rainbows and adorable Disney animals - only for him to then murder the king of those Disney animals and declare himself king.
- For a moment, it looks like the camp will get Larry the hamster back - only for the platypus to swallow him whole.
- Did Not Think This Through: To save the kids from the rampaging Platypus, David takes them to the end of the dock. This leads to them being cornered, and he comments, "This was a bad idea in hindsight!"
- Early-Installment Weirdness: David seems to be a lot more quick to anger in this episode, as seen on a few occasions. He barely held himself back from lashing out at Max when he complained about having to find a replacement mascot for the hamster he killed, he made a passive insult at Nerris' choice to have a tin can for a mascot, calling it "ridiculous", and he also started to get mad, when the platypus ate the hamster.
- Also, in the shot, where the kids walk away, chanting "Pussies!", there's a short little blue-haired girl character, going along with the group, who had never been properly introduced prior. She never appears and is never brought up for the rest of the series, making the presence of this random girl
extremely bizzare.

- Gadgeteer Genius: Max throws together a pretty impressive Rube Goldberg device in the intro.
- Mistaken for Murderer: Neil describes the Quartermaster as "the bad guy from every horror movie ever" and Nikki assumes he's planning to turn Max into a skin suit. He's also seen dragging a large, bloody sack of... something in the background.
- No Periods, Period: Gwen sits out most of this episode due to "lady sickness."
- Racist Grandpa: Whatever caused the Quartermaster to lose his hand, he blames "the Jews" for it.
- Rube Goldberg Hates Your Guts: Max builds one intended to kill David, but all it ends up doing is punting Larry the hamster across the lake.
