Recap / Bones S 8 E 21 The Maiden In The Mushrooms

Go To

The body of a tv producer is found buried under a patch of mushrooms, and the cast of her Judge Judy -esque shows are the primary suspects. Meanwhile, Brennan is worried about Christine's tendency to bite her fellow daycare attendees and Hodgins tries to replicate Finn's grandmother's hot sauce.

Tropes

  • The Alcoholic: Judge Trudy drinks heavily, to the point it's starting to affect her performance on the show.
  • Analogy Backfire: When Angela explains that Judge Trudy is a guilty pleasure, like watching a trainwreck, Bones tells her that a trainwreck is not pleasurable and she should feel guilty if she enjoys that.
  • Cowardice Callout: Played for Laughs. Brennan refuses to believe that Christine bit Emma in kindergarten, stating that the crying is hardly evidence, since Emma cries when they sing Itsy Bitsy Spider.
  • Grandma's Recipe: Hodgins uses up the last of the hot sauce from the company fridge, ignoring the note from another assistant, Finn, not to eat it. Turns out it was the very last bottle of hot sauce Finn's grandmother ever made, and seemingly irreplaceable. This being a forensic show, Hodgins manages to determine precisely what was in the hot sauce via testing and replicate it to make it up to Finn.
  • Jerkass Victim: Rebecca was murdered because she neglected her dog to death.
  • Literal-Minded: Sweets tells their first suspect that he understands her behavior perfectly. As a behavioral psychologist, he certainly does, but in the end she is cleared.
  • Mistaken for Cheating: Rebecca's boyfriend says they were together four year, with Iris the last two. Booth thinks that's motive, while Brennan explains that polyamory is accepted in many cultures, but the boyfriend clarifies that Iris is their dog.
  • Noodle Incident: Abernathy says he's not proud of it, but his cousin lost his hand because of their grandma's hot sauce.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: Judge Trudy
  • Oh, Crap!: When Hodgins realizes he drank the last bottle of hot sauce made by Finn's now-deceased grandmother.
  • Take That!: The totally-not-Judge Judy character is portrayed throughout as a self-important, alcoholic dolt.
