Recap / Bobs Burgers S 13 E 18 Gift Card Or Buy Trying

Go To

When a customer leaves a $100 gift card as a tip, Bob, Linda and the kids go on a $20-each shopping spree, and Gene has an awkward run-in with a former friend.

Gift Card or Buy Troping:

  • Damned by Faint Praise: When Gene realizes his annoying traits through Mitchell, the Belchers half-heartedly reassure him that it's not as annoying when he does it.
  • Discount Card: The Belchers get a $100 gift card for a megastore and decide to split it evenly, leaving them with $20 each. Linda and Louise both try to bargain with the others to get something that costs more: Louise a $25 archery set and Linda a sewing machine on sale at $99.95. Ultimately, Linda successfully talks the others out of getting their things so that she can get the sewing machine by reminding them that their old sewing machine barely even works anymore and that she's sewed them tons of costumes over the years, which they all enjoyed and she loves doing.
  • Hypocritical Humor: The entire episode is based on this trope, though it's done hilariously when Gene asks his sisters why would anyone want to be the center of attention, only to hypocritically complain to Tina that this is all about him (him, him).
  • Imagine Spot:
    • Bob has a couple while shopping.
      • When looking at a kettlebell, he imagines working out nonstop and getting more muscular, calling a store to ask if they have size XXL muscle shirts, tearing the one he has on at the moment with his bicep and noting he just went up another X.
      • When looking at a beanie with a built-in flashlight, he imagines using it to guide the family while lost in the woods at night, with the flashlight illuminating a ridiculously large area.
    • When Louise sees the archery set, she imagines herself shooting targets while doing acrobatic moves and jumping off a miniature trampoline before executing a Three-Point Landing and noting she needs to get a trampoline as well.
    • Tina imagines herself inside the English garden on the jigsaw puzzle she wants to buy.
  • Nice to the Waiter: The plot gets started when a customer leaves the Belchers a $100 gift card as a tip after greatly enjoying Bob's burgers.
  • Oblivious to His Own Description: Gene stopped being friends with Mitchell because he found him annoying, describing his many annoying habits that clearly apply to him as well. When Mitchell claims that he broke up with Gene because he found him annoying, Gene can't believe it, until he sees Mitchell buy the same noise-making toy he just bought and realizes that they're exactly the same. Even worse, Gene's repeated description of Mitchell to his family (and other people) doesn't get him to realize that they also see the glaring similarities between both of them.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Bob is clearly touched by the actions of the customer who left the card as a tip. The man continually praised the burger and left a large tip. Bob muses whether the guy was an angel sent just for him.
  • Too Much Alike: Gene eventually realizes that his friendship with Mitchell doesn't work out because they're too similar. Particularly they're both self-indulgent when it comes to making noise, which naturally leads to clashing because they inevitably end up playing over each other.
