Tropes

  • Can't Tie His Tie: Played for Laughs. Youths Duke and Damian can't tie their ties for a party without Alfred on hand and turn to Bruce for help. It turns out Bruce can't do it either, and frantically winds up calling Superman and the Justice League for help. When that doesn't work, they just follow Wonder Woman's suggestion to go without ties in the end.
  • Centipede's Dilemma: Implied; Superman has no apparent trouble tying his tie when he goes to work as Clark, yet he absolutely cannot help with the problem, even with a schematic courtesy of Green Lantern. Presumably he's used to tying his own tie and it's difficult for him to think how he does it.
  • Deus Exit Machina: Alfred is out of town, meaning that the Bat-Family can't take the easy way out and ask him to tie their ties for them. Duke suggests calling him, but Bruce isn't keen on the idea.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Even with Hal actually having a diagram as to how to tie a tie, no one is paying attention.
  • Gender Scoff: Diana scoffs over the team men making such a big deal about the ties.
  • Mundane Made Awesome: Bruce calls Superman for help because he can't figure out how to tie his tie (or Duke's or Damian's for that matter). Superman can't do it either, so he gets the Flash, who gets Lantern. This is all treated completely seriously, with Bruce even freaking out a little because they're going to be late. Wonder Woman saves the day.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Batman doesn't like other superheroes on his territory, so when Superman gets an alert from Gotham, he's convinced something awful has happened. He's initially flummoxed when he finds out that the Wayne family's "emergency" is of the mundane variety.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Money!: Bruce can't figure out how to tie a tie without Alfred's help. Wonder Woman suggests that he simply show up to the black-tie event without a tie because he's the richest man in Gotham so they're hardly going to turn him away.
  • Speak in Unison: Superman, Flash, and Green Lantern yell in unison at Green Arrow, who enters the conversation to ask why they don't just get Alfred to tie the ties for them.
  • Stating the Simple Solution: After becoming frustrated that no one can tie a tie, Diana just gives the simple answer. Just don't wear one.
  • Suddenly Shouting: When Green Arrow innocently asks why Bruce doesn't just ask Alfred to tie the ties, Superman, Flash, and Green Lantern all yell at him that he's out of town. Arrow wisely leaves.
  • Tempting Fate: As the comic begins, Bruce says in satisfaction that everything's under control and scoffs at Alfred's concern that they would have trouble without him. Then Duke and Damian arrive with untied ties.
  • Unsound Effect: Bruce pulling and twisting the tie is given its own word sound effects.
