The episode begins with Michael reading a story about Rainbow Beard the Pirate to his friends, who wish they could find the namesake pirate's missing treasure. The mysterious foggy specter of Rainbow Beard appears from the bottle, instructing them that they must follow his map of colors and shapes in order to find his treasure. While following the clues, Barney and his friends discover the shapes and colors all around us through songs and activities. This episode contains examples of:

  • Captain Colorbeard: Rainbow Beard the Pirate
  • Exact Words: One of the last clues hints at the location of Rainbow Beard's treasure chest: eggs mark the spot. Sure enough, the treasure chest is located below the tree in the playground, near a bird's nest.
    Michael: "X" Marks the Spot...
Barney: No, it says eggs mark the spot. You know, eggs?
  • It's the Best Whatever, Ever!: Michael claims a rainbow is "the best treasure of all," as it can be shared with everyone they love.
  • Least Rhymable Word: During the "Find the Color" game, Barney initially struggles to come up with a rhyme for the color "purple", coming up with "crawl like a turple" and "take a bite from an urple". He gets around this issue by declaring that "if your color's like this, give your friends a big kiss!"
  • Rhymes on a Dime: Rainbow Beard's exposition and his map are both full of rhymes.
Rainbow Beard: Ahoy, me hearties! Now, listen well
And a special secret I will tell:
If it's me treasure you wants to discover,
Then follow the map of shapes and colors.
It might be gold or jewels you'll find,
Or perhaps a treasure of another kind.
It'll be an adventure, if ye dares to try it! (Rainbow Beard laughs)
Sincerely yours, Rainbow Beard the Pirate!
  • Title Drop: Michael title-drops the episode name when reading the story:
Michael: And since that day, no one has ever found the map, the bottle, or the secret treasure of Rainbow Beard the Pirate.
  • Treasure Hunt Episode: The episode is about the characters looking for the treasure of Rainbow Beard the Pirate.
