Recap / Bar Rescue S 3 E 1 Turtle On Its Back

Go To

After being ousted from Tropical Isle Bar in Bourbon St. New Orleans, Brad Bohannan opens up the Turtle Bay Bar, a complete knockoff of the rival bar. Jon is called in to help rescue the bar and get the owner to embrace originality.

Episode Tropes:

  • Broken Bird: Jon Taffer flat out compares Brad Bohannan to a wounded puppy.
  • The Cobbler's Children Have No Shoes: A rather strange one, as manager Steve didn't know what beverage costs should be. While this was not the first time Jon had seen such a thing, he was a manager at Tropical Isle, which was plenty successful on its own.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: This episode is known as one of Jon's most successful rescues. Thanks to his efforts, Spirits on Bourbon draws in millions of dollars a year, and the new concept is a hit amongst the patrons. As of the start of 2023, it still stands tall.
  • Failed a Spot Check: When Jon sent his recon team to Turtle Bay, his recon team couldn't find it and ended up walking right by. Hell, two people didn't even know about the bar in the cold opening despite standing in front of it!
  • Hidden Depths:
    • Brad Bohannan reveals the original Hand Grenade was actually his creation from his time at Tropical Isle.
    • Brad apparently knows enough about copyright laws that he successfully won the lawsuit.
  • Meaningful Name: Spirits on Bourbon is this in many ways. The liquor they sell, its situation on Bourbon St, and the legend of the building.
  • Revenge Before Reason: Brad was so intent on getting back at the owners from Tropical Isle, he resorted to ripping them off over having his own unique brand.
  • Shoddy Knockoff Product: The big problem as to why the Turtle Bay Bar is failing is that it's a poor man's copy of the Tropical Isle Bar. Even their signature drink and cup, the Turtle Cup, is a knock-off of Tropical Isle's Hand Grenade.
  • Vomit Discretion Shot: Ron Duprat vomits after tasting foul gumbo.
