Playing With / The Computer Shall Taunt You

Basic Trope: A game mocks, taunts or otherwise insults the player.

  • Straight: If you fail a puzzle, an NPC appears on screen to laugh at you.
  • Exaggerated:
  • Downplayed: The player character's partner appears on screen to mock you, but does so in a light hearted manner before encouraging you to solve the puzzle.
  • Justified: The NPC is a Fourth-Wall Observer, and likes messing with the player.
  • Inverted:
    • The game mocks or insults itself.
    • Whenever you solve a puzzle, the player character appears on screen to praise you.
    • The player mocks the game after effortlessly breezing through a level that was supposed to be very difficult.
  • Subverted: The NPC is revealed to have been laughing at a Funny Background Event.
  • Double Subverted: Then they notice you failed a puzzle and start laughing at you as well.
  • Parodied: The NPC is really bad at throwing insults, and ends up looking ridiculous by calling the player a Big, Stupid Doodoo-Head.
  • Zig-Zagged: ???
  • Averted: The game doesn't mock the player.
  • Enforced: "People will really want to beat the game just to get this NPC to shut up".
  • Lampshaded: "Who are you making fun of, Bob? I don't see anyone there".
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: Another NPC appears on screen to call out the initial NPC before they can start mocking the player.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Implied: The player character gets word that Bob has been making fun of some [Save file name] person as of late.
  • Deconstructed: ???
  • Reconstructed: ???
  • Played for Laughs: The NPC intentionally chooses insults that the player is likely to find Actually Pretty Funny.
  • Played for Drama: After the player loses a life to a boss, the Big Bad appears on screen to laugh at the player and remind them of what will happen if they fail to save the day.
