Playing With / The Bore

Go To

Basic Trope: A character who others find boring.

  • Straight: Spencer dresses mundanely, likes to sit and read quietly in his own time, and isn't very outgoing. He has trouble making friends because people think he's too boring.
  • Exaggerated: Spencer doesn't wear anything besides plain white clothes, eats nothing but tofu, and meticulously plans out all his routines. His only hobby is watching paint dry, which he describes in meticulous detail to anyone who's willing to listen.
  • Downplayed: Spencer's got an odd quirk that some people find amusing, but that's the only notable thing about him.
  • Justified: Spencer likes to live a by-the-books lifestyle, and doesn't particularly care about if it makes him interesting or not.
  • Inverted: Everyone likes to be around Spencer's girlfriend Mary because of how crazy and off-the-wall she is.
  • Subverted: It's merely a facade, and Spencer actually has Hidden Depths once you get to know him.
  • Double Subverted: The Hidden Depths being, he's a dedicated collector of plain white envelopes.
  • Parodied:
    • Spencer is so boring that everyone falls asleep as soon as he opens his mouth.
    • Spencer is so boring that people will stampede away from him the moment they see him.
    • Spencer is so boring that people - be it naturally or self-inflicted - literally die of boredom when he talks.
  • Zig-Zagged: Spencer has New Jobs As The Plot Demands. In episodes where he's got a job, he'll be super enthusiastic and fun to be with, but when he doesn't, he's dull and boring.
  • Averted: Spencer does not bore others.
  • Enforced: The executives think that boredom will drive people to do crazy things, which can jumpstart most of their plots. They create a character who's designed to bore others as much as possible.
  • Lampshaded: "Uhhh... Mary, can I ask you a question? Do people really think I'm boring?"
  • Invoked:
    • Spencer believes that Boring, but Practical philosophy should be taken to its Logical Extreme.
    • Spencer doesn't want to draw attention, and makes himself as dull as possible to blend into the background.
  • Exploited: Bob makes late-night calls to Spencer whenever he needs help falling asleep.
  • Defied: Spencer specializes in a talent that is genuinely interesting.
  • Discussed: "Oh, my boyfriend Spencer? Yeah, I may be a bit of a cloudcuckoolander and he's a complete bore, but I think he fits the yin to my yang!"
  • Conversed: "I understand where these characters are coming from. Nobody likes boring people."
  • Implied: Spencer's Establishing Character Moment includes him beginning to talk about the weather with a Naïve Newcomer and everybody else in the room collectively pounding back their beverages.
  • Played For Laughs:
  • Played For Drama: Spencer caused someone to commit suicide by boring them at a very inappropiate moment. Now he's going to go to jail, or at the very least the Court of Public Opinion will make sure his existence becomes a living hell from now as "revenge".
  • Played for Horror: Spencer is literally capable of boring you to death, be it because of an unknown capacity to psionically transmit suicidal thoughts or because he's a type of vampire that sucks what could be broadly described as "the joy of life" out of his victims.
