Basic Smurf: A word is used frequently as a substitute for other words, often in parts of speech it shouldn't be.

  • Straight: The Smurfs like to insert the word "smurf" in their sentences, like "We should smurf along and see smurf waterfalls".
  • Exaggerated: Everyone talks like this: "Smurf smurfed smurfingly smurfy smurf."
  • Downplayed: The word "smurf" can be used as a positive adjective and a positive adverb, but that's it.
  • Justified: Like many other words, "smurf" has a variety of unrelated connotations that can only be understood by someone familiar with the dialect.
  • Inverted: The Smurfs don't ever use the word "smurf". They use various substitute words when referring to their species.
  • Smurfverted:
    • "'We should smurf along and see smurf waterfalls'? What kind of nonsense is that?"
    • The 'smurf' sound is the only bit of the word that is audible to human ears. There are other explicit components of it. Essentially the equivalent of only hearing the 't' sound of the word 'the' or 'trope'.
  • Double Smurfverted: "'Smurf' can be a verb, but not a smurfing determiner!"
  • Parodied:
  • Zig Zagged: Some Smurfs speak like this to various degrees, some don't, and a third group alternates between speaking like this and not speaking like this.
  • Averted: The Smurfs speak normally.
  • Enforced:
    • "If we can replace random words with 'smurf', it'll make the writing easier."
    • "What's the easiest way to give the Smurfs a distinct way of speaking?"
  • Lampshaded: "Why does everyone smurf every smurfing word with 'smurf'? It smurfs me! I hate it!"
  • Invoked: The Smurfs intentionally shift their language by adding more "smurf" in their sentences to create a cipher language.
  • Exploited: Non-Smurfs have no smurfin' clue what the Smurfs are talking about- after all, one word is being used to substitute for dozens, if not hundreds, of other words. So the Smurfs use their bizarre speech pattern as a nearly unbreakable code that can only be understood by someone intimately familiar with Smurf.
  • Defied: The Smurfs decide to ban the use of the word "smurf" for other purposes than referring to their species.
  • Discussed: "I hope we don't become one of the species that misuse one word for hundreds of purposes."
  • Conversed: "Come on! How many meanings can the word 'smurf' have?!"
  • Desmurfed: Because the word "smurf" can mean so many things, communication between Smurfs, and their society, starts to fall apart.
  • Resmurfed: The wisest Smurf writes down the possible meanings of the word "smurf". The Smurfs also make sure to ask whenever they're unsure what someone meant.
  • Smurfed A Good Waste: It seems that the word "smurf" is a substitute for random words, but older viewers will notice that it seems to accidentally be used in place of dirty words.
  • Smurfed For Laughs:
    • "Smurf" is used as an Unusual Euphemism, an original G-rated swear, or similar.
    • The Smurfs are Grammar Nazis, and argue over the usage of the word "smurf", such as what functions the word can and can't have, and what the different variations of it are.
    • Smurf Order Flub: A problem many foreigners have to deal with while learning how to inflect the word.
  • Smurfed For Drama: The Smurfs struggle with pronunciation issues as well as their small vocabularies. They insert the word "smurf" when they don't know the proper word, or just can't pronounce it.
